R&R Oil Pan Gasket on 250

The question has probably been asked before, but I couldn't locate it...How involved is it to remove and replace an oil pan gasket for an inline 6 250 in a 1966 C-20? Does the engine and/or transmission (3-speed column) have to partially come up to gain access? Thanks in advance.

Put a jack under the oil pan with a piece of 2x4 (so you don't damage the pan) and unbolt the motor mounts. Jack the engine up enough to remove the pan. Put 2x4s between the mounts and the block and remove the jack.

I would also replace the rear main oil seal while the pan is off. Unbolt the rear main bearing cap. The new seal should come with a plastic tool to drive the seal out. Clean things up, put a dab of sealant on the ends of the seal and bolt the cap back in place.

The factory repair manual describes all of this with very good instructions. Get one from one of the vendors. It will become the most used tool in your tool box.

I've done this job on my 77, which also has a 250. Like Fred said, you have to lift the engine a bit, but it's pretty easy from below (no hoist or hood removal needed). I also cleaned up and painted my pan, because these don't seem to be nearly as available as the small block ones....

You can also check the rod and main bearings from below. I replaced all my rod bearings at the same time.
