1969 with 396?

Looked at a pickup today (tried to buy it) that is a 1969 short fleet 2 wheel drive 396 big block with turbo 350 auto. The pickup is a well used pickup. Looks like a farm pickup. BUT-- My question is---- the SPID says 396, and it has the fender badges, but I thought all the big blocks were 402's.

Re: 1969 with 396?

you could get a 396 in it. look at the option sheet on the glove box door. it may tell you what it came with. I thought if it had a 396 it would also have a th400 instead of th350

Re: 1969 with 396?

68 and 69 could be had with the 396. In 70 they changed the badges to 8-400. However, it may still read 396 on the glovebox lable. I think in 69 it could be had with the turbo 400 or turbo 350. I think it was the same option code.

Re: 1969 with 396?

Thanks. I guess I learned something today. He told me it was the origional engine. Said all he's replaced is the carb. It's also air conditioned. Looks like he lives in it. Had to move things to look in the glove box. I would like to have it. Does anybody know how many 1969 BB auto air short fleet 2x4 were made? Is it worth going after in rough condition?

Re: 1969 with 396?

If the cab is salvageable, i'd guess $1500 -- if its as rough as you say -- maybe 2k if you have the skills to bring it back from the dead

who knows - nobody would beat you over the head if you paid a little more though --- short fleet big block trucks with AC cabs don't exactly grow on trees

Re: 1969 with 396?

GM offered the 396 until 1968 and then they put 402's in 1969 and newer they just didn't always change the badges. A good example is the chevelle SS a 68 had a 396 a 69 had a 402 but by then the term SS 396 had stuck with the public so they didn't change it.

Re: 1969 with 396?

Bryan68custom is close to being right.
In 68 and 69, it was a 396.
In 70, it went to the 402, but was called a 400 in many truck and station wagon aplications, and called a 396 in performance car aplications due to the strong performance immage the 396 had already earned.
There are many stories as to why they bored them out .030 over to make the 402, some say fire, some say flood, bit the only one I have heard that sounds like something GM would do, is inner office politics. In '70, chevy introduced the 400 small block. GM top brass sisn't want a small block to be bigger than a big block, so they increased the big block to 402 cid.
Both the TH350 and TH400 were sold under the RPO M49 in trucks. In cars, the TH350 went under M38, and on ocassion M38 is seen on the SPID in a truck.
On that note, I have never heard of, nor seen a big block truck with a TH350... not as original anyways. Did you verify it was a TH350, or are you going by the seller's word?
In some parts of the country, a factory BB SWB truck would go for stupid money. That $1500 comment up there would barely get you a running 67 - 72 truck here.

Re: 1969 with 396?

I figure they increased the displacement on the 396 for whatever reason they did it to the 283 and 327.

Re: 1969 with 396?

I'm just going on what he said. It could be a 400 auto. I dont want to push him to hard , so I might back off awhile. Does the code M-49 on the spid ID it as a 400? Drive buy pictures. Also whats the code Z-62 Cust-Comf & Appear E Q . What is this?

Re: 1969 with 396?

GM used M49 for both TH350 and TH400.The truck is a Custom,mid-range trim model. It has the trim at the glass, knobs, pedals, chrome bumper, etc.

I'd be all over that. Looks fairly straight, and BB SWB trucks aren't getting any cheaper.

Re: 1969 with 396?

I am willing to go 1,500 as is. I'm a numbers guy though. Are the production numbers low for this model? This alone could make me go higher.

who cares. get it. if you like the truck and its what you want. which it sounds like it is just get it. unless the ol codjer gives it to you, you prolly wont be able to flip it and make enough money for all the trouble. if you gata have it. get it. if you gata talk yourself into it. walk away. good luck.

Re: 1969 with 396?

you'll never find any production numbers.
it is one of the most sought after combinations. The only thing that would make it more desirable to 75% of the collectors and enthusiests would be if it was a 72 and a cheyenne super.

Re: 1969 with 396?

I agree with Longhorn. But either way,That truck is in alot nicer shape than mine is in. I paid about the same thing you are willing to pay, Plus mine is not running at the moment due to having to rebuild the engine.

Re: 1969 with 396?

I`d pay $3,000 to get a numbers matching 396 A/C shortbed in that condition. It`s odd to be what it is w/o alot of other options usually found on a shortbed ordered with a BBC.Someone wanted the power w/o the flash.

I agree with Tim. With what options the truck has and it looks to be in decent shape, I would go to $3000.00 bucks but no more than that.
