Question bout cylinder heads
Question 1. Would the newer 96+ vortec heads fit on a 327 block? I know i'd have to purchase a new intake that'll accept the new heads and be able to use my Edelbrock. Question 2. Will these heads perform better than the the double hump heads I have now? I know this all comes down to how well the heads are worked, and what cam and other combonations are used, but was thinking about going to the new heads. I've heard great things bout them.....

yes the vortecs will work, and they will work better than fuellies.. now having said that( I hate vortecs) it depends on what kind of performance your looking for?? just a daily driver that you want a little more punch from? vortecs are perfect for that..future improvements (needing more power) they dont lend them self to upgradeing on power. the vortecs will end up costing 750.00+.once you figure in intake..self aligning rockers..valve covers..spring upgrade.. for the same price you can get anyone of a number of aftermarket heads, that allow for more horses. It all depends on what the plan(future) of your build up is....

Vortecs
I'm putting on a set of vortecs right now with roller rockers an air gap intake (edlbrock) and a new holley avenger offroad carb. Well see what happens in a couple of days.

Another nice thing about the Vortecs (or any other new head) is that the come "no-lead ready" with hardened valve seats.

I'll have to add in here that I have a set of world product S/R heads on mine. They are unleaded friendly, have guide plates and screw in rocker studs, extra thick decks and are supposed to flow as good or better than any chevy head that ever came in a car. Plus I paid around $400 total for the pair NIB and they fit all the old manifolds and accesories.

I have a set of Fuelie heads on my 68 and if I were to actually buy another set of heads (I am thinking about upgrading when I have the cash), I would probably buy Edelbrock Etec 200 heads! Vortec based heads that actually out flow GM's Fast Burn Vortech Heads, have bigger Valves and Cost about $ 40 per head less then Fastburn!! Plus these heads will defintely outflow a Fuelie Heads!!

what about port +polishing i no it made a world of difference on my 400ex (quad) what are the gains plus who does it?

a bowl port job will add between 20-30 HP gasket matching and polishing maybe another 10. all of the HP gains will be in the upper rpm range...DO NOT port the vortecs, from what I understrand it makes them flow worse

you can do work to the exhaust side and be ok but if you mess with the intake side; that's where you'll screw stuff up.
the exhaust side on vortecs are kinda crappy (just look at flow #'s). check out edelbrock's etec heads, they made improvements to the exhaust side of their heads.
