budget exhaust question

so me and my dad are finishing up his '72 and We need to get the exhaust done it will be ram horn's to 2.5" pipe and dumped out the side behind the rear tire. Problem is we cant decide what mufflers. Were kinda on a budget right now so Ive kinda narrowed it down to some price friendly ones but ones that I think would sound good. What do you guys think

1.summit race mufflers
2.force pro mufflers
3. cherry bomb extreme
4. moroso spiral flow

Re: budget exhaust question

I picked up some of the $17 summit turbos. they are made by Thrush for summit, just much less expensive b/c you're not paying for a name. I ran 2.5" straight pipes off long headers and they sounded pretty mellow at first, but then gave me a nice sound as the broke in. Pretty mellow, but nice.

Re: budget exhaust question

Bought a pair of no name Cherry-Bomb look-a-likes at at a swapmeet for $25. Runnin' rams and 2.5 exhaust in front of tire. About $60 for the system.

Re: budget exhaust question

I just put exhaust on my truck last week. Thrush has a brand new muffler out. They are chambered and fully welded. I really wanted to run flowmasters but they are way too expensive anymore. I went to summit and picked up a pair of these thrush mufflers. They look a lot like flowmasters and sound very similar. After running these I will not buy flowmasters anymore unless I can get them cheap. The Thrush mufflers are about $29 each. I highly reccomend them. Before I bought the thrush's I looked at the summit "chambered" mufflers ($32 ea.). The summit ones look o.k. but they were more like a turbo muffler inside than a chambered muffler. The thrush's are louder than a turbo, I think they sound just like a 40 series flowmaster.

You can get a whole system thru LMC that work great for less than $250.

Get some cheap turbos, they sound great. They aren't too loud....but they scream when the secondaries open.

Re: budget exhaust question

I just put an LMC kit on my SWB4x4, Turned out pretty Good. Fit is Good, I got the kit that exits behind rear wheels. I put a Blazer tank under frame and was not sure of fit for rear exit.

Re: budget exhaust question

Glass packs are your only other option for cheap. I was going to suggest summit turbos, but you already said you dont want those...

Re: budget exhaust question

Yeah, but different tests show flowmasters don't flow much better than a no-name glasspack or a stock muffler, they just make more noise.

I'd get some Thrush turbos, or maybe even Magnaflows if your budget allows.

Re: budget exhaust question

the cherry bomb extremes are like single chamber flowmasters. I do have a set of magnaflows sitting in the garage. Dont know if I like the way they sound though

Re: budget exhaust question

dynomax bullets at summit. cheap as glasspacks, but louder and they dont blow out in a few months because they're packed with stainless steel mesh instead of fiberglass. they're legal, and as loud as you'll get. i got 2 for 30 bucks on ebay, they're 39 bucks each new

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

easy in and out, easy to put on, unlike many offset outlet flowmasters and other mufflers in a oval case.

Do you have a picture of how it looks on the vehicle? And has anyone used a set of these and hooked them up to full length headers??

Re: budget exhaust question

Kenm I could probaly get a few, might be a day or two.
When I was putting it together I put it on 1 side at time to make sure of fit. They have anextension piece that goes on before the Mufflers but I put it on after the Muffler and did not notice what I had done until I got the other side done and tightened all up. Doesn't really make that big if difference except for the Mufflers are half under the cab and half under the bed. I just got in a hurry.
It was all straight till it went up over the axle. When it was tightened all down with hangers it is very tight from front to back. The only thing I did not totally like was after it went over the axle and where it comes out it angles up, I do not have my rear bumper on yet may look different with bumper on. It doesn,t sounds pretty good.
