Side exit exhaust

Has anyone built a side exit exhaust system that exits through a cut out in the bed? I have seen a few on other trucks that dump out ahead of the rear wheels. I am pondering the idea of doing that on my 72 K-10 build. Does anyone know of any companies that make the hardware?

This truck has one -- but its obviously a ground pounder---

I'm not sure how the overall package would look on a 4x4 . If its a pretty radical build , that would be cool, but if it looks like a resto-mod type with a lift kit, i'd think about it long and hard

Only thing I would worry about, is the paint burning from the heat.

Re: Side exit exhaust

This isn't really going to help you much, but there was a thread about this probably a year or so ago. that thread had some links to 2 or 3 different companies offering what you're looking for. I don't know the prices though.

Re: Side exit exhaust

What about a pair of '65-66 Mustang GT trim pieces? They have a curve to them that may, or may not, be appropriate for the side of the bed, but finding one that is available to trial fit is going to be a problem. They are available aftermarket, though.

Some of what I have seen is not a hole, per se, but a notch that is specifically made to locate the exit of the tailpipe. Could be in the side, or the rear....bumper or roll pan. Think back to the late '60's 442's and Chevelle SS's.

Just use your imagination.

Re: Side exit exhaust

Honestly on a 4x4 I think the regular full factory type exahust will look the best - side exit, but behind the rear wheels. I'm not really a fan of straight out the back duals on trucks.

As far as the side exit thing goes, if you are planning to do any type of driving with the truck it might be louder than behind the wheel.

I say have them made or make your own. You can buy "oval pipe" now - custom make it to fit the truck.

A quick google search came up with this place, but the prices seem high to me.

Didn't he cut out a pc. of alum. the shape of the exhaust tip he was using, and then bolt it to the bed.

I wanted to do it to the Jimmy but my frame seems to be in the way, and people are saying it will get old quick. Noise in your ear, I'm still on the fence

Do a search on Boise Craigslist, there is a guy in the area making nascar style tips sorta interesting. If I can find it I'll try to post it!

Re: Side exit exhaust

I am considering a side exit on each side of the truck, but I will use an oval design tip and the bed will have the lower edge cut and molded to give aobut a1/2" to 3/4" gap around the tips. The trick is to mold the edge, so that it is re-enforced too the pooint that it looks like it was made at the factory.

Re: Side exit exhaust

I've been thinking of doing something similar. Except I'm thinking 4 smaller ones one each side ahead of the wheels. Kind of like what the old Buicks had on the hood.
Then adding flame throwers

Re: Side exit exhaust

i have to agree, on a 4x4, side exits will look kinda dumb.

i do like the look of huge (3 inches or more) dual pipes, with about a 45 degree bend out behind the rear wheel.
