I just recently picked up a 1967 c10 custom for 300 bucks . the guy I boought it from told me it has a flat cam in the original 283.My question is without pulling the cam is there a way to figure this out. He also gave another 283 that has been bored 60 over and I was thinking about pulling the cam out of it since it is missing heads and intake.HELP!

Heyt welcome from Mississippi...
Sorry I can't tell much about things like that until they are out of the engine, then I still am not real good.

welcome from Washington!
On the cam problem With the vehicle running, You could pull the valve covers and look at the rockers and pushrods. Look to see if they all are going up and down at about the same rate. If you see any that aren't moving very much compared to the others, those are the ones with the bad lobes. (less cam lift=less rocker movement) This procedure should work most of the time unless you have other damage, lifter damage, bent pushrod etc.

Welcome fron central Ohio...
You thought about slappin the 60 over 283 in there? It would be easier to swap the heads and intake than a cam swap IMO. Plus there should be a couple more ponies in that engine. |

Welcome from the pot capitol of North America The Kootenays, the only best way you can find out about the cam problem would be to pull it our, a new rv cam is around 100 bucks and i am sure it would be due for a new one regardless if it has a flat lobe or not

Welcome from Southern Oregon.
You could also check for flat lobes while not running the engine. Take the valve covers off and remove the spark plugs. Put a socket on the harmonic balancer bolt and turn the engine over and watch the rockers for movement. Removing the plugs only makes it easier to turn the engine over (no compression).

Welcome again from Maryland!. You will need a toll that measures the valve height mounted on your head on the intake and exhaust with the valve cover removed. This will give you an idea of your cam lift.

Yeah I have thought about that but the other block is out of a 57 chevy and themotor mounts are in the front. If I could bolt it in it would probably be a sweet motor.
