Is it possible to make a patina truck?

I was thinking about getting myself a new work truck. I really love those patina looking rat rod trucks. I was curious if there were chemicals to help the process move much faster or do i just have to be patient and wait for the right truck to come along? Thanks alot

Why not... they take fiberglass bodys and make them look like rust buckets.

Yes you can rust metal, you use muratic acid, then once it is rusted you coat it in laquer or clear coat, and this will keep the rust from progressing further.

I've been out of the paint and body field for a long time, and I claim to only know enough to really screw up what could be a good paint job... however...
Painting clear over rust, would be the same as painting over rust... and I think anyone who has ever painted any suspention parts on a driver knows how that turns out.
Also, since the rust is a chemical reaction on the METAL'S surface, the rust would continue to 'grow' or 'eat' the metal under the paint since nothing has been done to seperate the rust from the metal.

I know the head fabricator for http://www.firemountainforge.com He actually taught me quite a bit about welding and fab work, they rust metal out there, and they also have a patina process that they use. It might be worth the while to give a call and ask them.

Are you trying to get a usted patina or just the faded and sometimes multicolored paint. If you have nice sheetmetal then I wouldn't dare rust it. I've seen people go as far as airbrushing rust on their trucks. Here is a guitar with an awesome rust job.

Here is a pic of what i am looking for. I searched ebay and classic car trader and didn't find anything that would be cheap enough and or have that look. If i don't sell my frame i thought about putting a this type truck on top of the frame and use it as my work truck. I am also thinking about swaping out the motor to a 5.3 LSx motor so i would get better gas milage.

Hello I have been lurking around here for a while and finally decided to throw in my two cents. When I was a kid I use to trap alot. Yes you can but it is not easy or cheap and most of all not a fast thing to do. I guess it would take 3-4 times as long to do a rust free patina rust job then it would to do a nice DD/show paint job! I plan on just that with my 51 F-1 that I got last year out of an old barn were it had been parked for over 40yrs (1961).
I love how it looks right now but the problem is I want to chop it 2", section the cab and doors 4", section the hood 2", section the front fenders 2" and shorten the bed about 6" then place teh cab right on the running boards. Problem is once this is al done the old patina look will be ruined. SO here is the plan, do all the body mods, fix all the rust (very little) and get it ready for a show paint job and then follow the artical that I read last night to the "T" and end up with a RUST FREE patina paint job with rust worked in to the mix! I just read an 8 page artical in Street Rod Builder (March 2008) on doing just this but to a fiberglass 36 ford. It shows all the tricks and tells you most of what they use as well, it is a work of art.

Here is what I am starting with! I will take pics of all the rusted areas and warn spots so I can re-create them after teh metal work is done. They were saying it is very important to re-create the rust were it would have started and same with the warn paint areas.

I went to their site and the mag is too new for any of it to be on the site yet. You need to get this mag because their are tones of good articals that are very detailed with alot of How-To's that the truck guys can use.

Here is a scan of the first page of the artical. This 36 is a fiberglass body and they show step by step How-To in the Street Rod Builder mag. Also if you were not awair they have a Truck Builder mag as well that is really good. One of the mag guys hangs out here on this site from time to time.

The more I think about it how cool would it be for me to build my 70 2WD Blazer with the 68 front clip and have it look this old! Heck then I could use the top that is has now since it already looks the part.

Thanks everyone for you help! It looks like there is a way to achieve what i am looking for but I think i have to be patient and find the right truck first. This was my original idea. Find an older paint job truck hopefully something slightly faded and then sand the hood, top of rear bedsides, roof, and so on till it was bare metal. Then hose down the truck a few times a week to help it rust a little faster. I thought within a few months there should be a nice coat of surface rust that would eventually thickin. This is funny. I am acutally wanting the rust.

Right now I'm just trying to keep it where it is at until I get to that part of the rebuild so it don't eat more
