HEI help
Have 73 gmc 350 w/HEI. Have a liquid balancer, new. My shop manual states when changing to HEI you have to move to 5:30 by clock on the dist. for #1 plug. My question is, when i pull the dist out, note pos of rotor do i have to move the oil pump gear so when i re-insert dist it will be at 5:30 o'clock and how is this done.http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/i...ilies/gmc2.gif

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi!
Use a large flat screwdriver to move the oil pump if necessary.

Re: HEI help
Yes Krue,,hit it. What you do is lay on the engine with a flashlight in your left hand and a long flat screwdriver in your right. Turn the oil pump drive rod to the proper position, then a touch off because the gears have a curve to them. You'll see what I'm talking about as you stab it in. Trial and error will get it perfect. I wonder why they suggest that step in moving the firing order starting point. Really,, it doesn't matter where they start as the HEI can have the plugwires start at any position as long as they go clockwise and match 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2. There's a relatively new camshaft out on the market that changes the firing order slightly on the sbc that enhances perforformance and reduces harmonic vibrations.Good Luck.

Re: HEI help
The only advantage I have seen to using the "factory" starting point is that the pre-cut plug wires you buy work out better.
