Posi clutch kit
Does anybody know where I can get a posi rebuild kit for my 12-bolt. My local GM parts guy says they can't get it. Year One is out of stock. Of course they both want to sell me a whole posi unit. I was told there are two kits one with 12 clutches and 300lb springs and one with 14 clutches and 400lb springs.
Thanks,

Re: Posi clutch kit
My friend was in an automotive tech program at a local community college a few years back, and was going to rebuild the posi in my blazer. Long story short, no one could get any parts for it. The teacher said they couldn't be rebuilt, just to throw the chunk away and buy a new one. If you end up geting something that will rebuild it, please post the information on it, I would like to have it.

Re: Posi clutch kit
I just sent a posi carrier to Randy's Ring & Pinion...didn't even remove the ring gear. They replaced the clutches and installed heavier springs.

Re: Posi clutch kit
A few yrs back I rebuilt a unit for the 12 bolt in my longhorn, & got the pcs through a local driveline shop. too many yrs to remember on the clutch count, but if you are street driven, you dont want to go too heavy on the springs. The other thing, is that by the time I replaced clutches, springs ,spring plates, shims, & the pin.....I was about 1/2 way to the price of a new unit. I have never had any trouble with the unit, but my understanding is that the new Eaton units have a carbon fiber facing on the discs.....just fruit for thought. crazyL

Re: Posi clutch kit
If it is an Eaton possi unit, the replacement parts can be ordered from Tom's Differentials. They have been in the differential business for 35 years so they know differentials.
Here is a link: http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/tomp.htm Jim

Re: Posi clutch kit
Great info guys. I'm building this 12 bolt for my 72 GSX clone drag car. I went to Randy's and I see where they sell four spring kits 200, 300, 400 and 800lb spring kits. Which would be best for a strip only car?

Re: Posi clutch kit
Hambone: I'm having exactly the same problem. I can find spring kits, I can find a bearing kit, but I can't find a clutch kit.... hence, my posi is sitting on the shelf in my workshop instead of where it belongs.
I yanked mine from a junkyard truck, expecting to be able to pick up these parts anywhere, and I'm shocked that there aren't more options for clutches (or, I should say, any options for clutches). /g |
