Did lowered spindles = rub brake shield fub for you?
Hey folks. I Installed the rotors last night and they turned out OK. The only problem is that the brake dust shield is rubbing on the lower control arm? Anyone else run into this? Am I going to have to make a slight cut into the brake dust shield?

MisterE,
is there enough clearance to pry it out towards the rotor at all? |

Not a whole lot. When I do, it just rubs further out.

Re: Did lowered spindles = rub brake shield fub for you?
On my '69, with ECE components, no problems. However, on my '96 with DJM components, time and 50K miles have left the backing plate on the discs to come into contact with the lower control arm. The backing plate, which is stock, has a cut-out that cleared the lower control arm when the height was stock. I assume that some weakening of the springs, etc., allowed for the slight change in geometry, that has led to this state. The only issue I have is having to listen to a squeal when turning at very low speeds. You can see the shiny spot on the backside of the backing plate, as evidence. Next time I have an occasion to disassemble the brakes, I'm gonna cut another clearance slot.

MisterE,
It's hard to tell but is it possible your dust shields are installed inside out? Mine are concave towards the rotors, and yours seem convex. Just a thought. Pete |

I just installed the same dust shields and I have all ECE stuff. I think yours are inside out, or backwards. Look at my pictures in my build thread "iced green dream" and it shows my photos.

Re: Did lowered spindles = rub brake shield fub for you?
I just checked out your build thread where you have the shields mounted without the rotors and they are mounted backwards. The little "cup" on the dust shield mounts towards the spindle, (don't forget the "o" ring between the shield and the spindle or it'll vibrate).
Hope this helps. Pete |

Great! Glad it worked out for you.
Mine are the same as the shields on Pipsc10's truck, so I guess there's two different kinds out there. Pete |
