Engine idle races when clutch engaged

Haven't been here for a while but I know there are some experts with some suggestions. I just bought a 81 K5 Blazer a couple of weeks ago and it runs great until I come to a stop light, stop sign etc. When I engage the clutch to go to neutral the engine idle will race up to 1200-1500 rpms. I have to mash the gas to get the idle to drop back down to 800 or so. Replaced most of the vacuum lines and lubed pedal and cable. Suggestions are welcome. I'd hate to have to take it to a shop.

Sounds like it is time to rebuild the quadra jet to me.
At least time to take a real good look at the choke and assosiated linkages.
