Cylinder head help
I recently bought a '72 truck with what I believe is a '68 307. This was a project truck for a guy, but he gave up early in the game (probably the first inning).
He said the heads are no good on the motor, and gave two heads with the truck. The heads have this number stamped on them: 14102183. The valve covers are center bolt. I think the heads are off something newer than '72 for sure, but will they work on the '68 block? The block casting number is V0111CMA. If these heads won't work, which ones will? I'm on a tight-TIGHT budget. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. |

well, i'm no expert. but, this is the most info i can find.
14102193...87-up...305/350......1.94"/1.5" valves (i know your number is -83, but it's possible you mistyped, or the number on the block looked odd. whichever, thats the closest i can find for your head number). and as far as the casting number for the block..i can find NOTHING that has letters in it. where did you get the number off of? if you don't mind me asking, because the place you're going to want to is on the back of the block, on the driver side, behind the head and by the bellhousing. however, with the information you gave me, V0111CMA, i can tell you the block was amde in Flint, Michigan, on January 11. what year, i'm not sure. CMR, not CMA, is the suffix. and, thats about it. i don't know about the heads; i'm sure someone else will chime in. but, i hope i atleast shed some light onto your situation. -Sam.

All gen 1 sbc heads will interchange, to find out what motor is ur gonna need the casting # not the id, look on the left rear of motor on the bellhousing flange.

If the heads are true 87 and up, they will bolt to the older blocks (Gen 1) but the 4 center bolts for the intake manifold are machine a straighter angle. You can use the newer Vortex manifold (Gen2) or the intake holes can be elongated on the older manifold (Gen 1) for fitment. I recommend using the newer manifold.

Thanks for the help everyone!
The V011CMA number is located on the block directly in front of the passenger side head. The list shows it could have been a 307 from 68, OR a 350 from a 74. SO, I'm still not sure what it is. I guess I'll have to do some degreasing and find another # on the block near the bellhousing. Not sure what manifold is on the truck, however it is set up with a 4bbl. (A shot holley). Hopefully the heads I have will work on the motor and manifold. I'm not looking to make a show truck, but a good running daily driver. Thanks again! |

After climbing in, over, through, and under the truck, I found the following numbers. The casting number at the back of the block is 14093638. According to mortec.com, that's an 87-95 350. But the number on the front of the motor (in front of the passenger cylinder head) is V0111CMA. According to nastyz28 website, the block is a '74 350. SO, which one do I have?
Then on to my next question. What Edelbrock intake will I need to use the cylinder heads (14102193) with this motor? I don't want to have to ream out the intake bolt holes to use the heads. I was looking at the performer intakes in the low RPM range. At least I know it's not a 307 anymore! It actually has 5.7LG SGI on the back of the block near the bellhouse. Any information would be appreciated! |

casting #s are written in stone. stampings can be changed. I would trust the 14093638. also having 5.7 cast into it instantly tells me its a late model with a one piece rear main, balanced flywheel.

if the heads are 87-95 you will need a intake for a 87-95. a vortec intake will not work because a vortec only has 8 bolts that hold it down, and no bolts in the center of mounting flange and all bolts go straight down, 87-95 still have 12 bolts with center 2 on each side that go straight down the other 8 go in at a angle like 86 and older

That's a good block to start with, one piece rear mains usually don't leak. There's a slim chance it has a roller cam, which is a nice bonus.

do your self a favor before you put those heads on take them to a machine shop and have them checked

Well, I'm tearing down the motor to get ready for a rebuild. To my surprise (But not the surprise of Clay68) It has a roller cam! Not really sure what it means as far as the motor, but this is the first one I've seen. I've dealt with solid lifters before, but the roller lifters and lifter retaining plate (is that what it's called?) are kind of cool. Now I need to drain the rest of the coolant somehow without spilling it all over the garage floor!

That most likely means it is a car engine if it has a roller cam. Those heads you have a fine for an everyday driver, but they are about the worst SBC head there is in terms of being a performance head. They are swirl port heads which means the intake port has a divertor that restricts airflow and creates turbulance. This was done to give the TBI engines more torque at the cost of high RPM capability. If you are buiding it for power, I'd choose another head.

You'll make a mess, but that's the way it goes. I really didn't think you'd find a roller cam, but you lucked out. Some folks call the lifter retainer a spider, but whatever works for you.

Ok, another engine question. I know I'll find the answer from someone!
The 350 block I have (14093638) is listed as a 1987-1995 engine. If I have an older style intake (Edelbrock 2701), can I use a set of older style heads? A gentlement in my neighborhood GAVE me a set of stock 350 heads (462624). Will the older style heads work on the newer style block with the intake listed? The heads have been magnafluxed already, and are good. Nothing fancy. Like Letterman's "Will it Float?" segment, this board needs a "Will it Work?" permanent thread. Thanks! |
