picked up a '67...now ive got some questions

i posted a thread a few days ago about a 67 c10 i was looking at. i ended up buying it, and now theres a few things im gonna fix on it and had some questions about them.

it needs new hood hinges, because back of the hood sits up a little bit once the hood is closed. i think the springs are probly worn out but im not sure. are 67 hinges the same as the later 69-72 style fenders use? i didnt look at them to close yet.

AND.. it has the aluminum slot rims on it from the 70's dont get me wrong i kind of like em, but i have some stock 15" wheels from a 69 K10 and i was thinking about repainting them white and putting them on here. havnt decided yet i just wondered if the 4x4 rims will be the same.

and lastly, the rear end in this thing has had the spider gears welded all together. so it doesnt go around corners worth a sh*t. and im sure if i keep driving it this way somthing will break, it squeels the tires pretty good around tight corners. i know ive heard 67 rear ends are not as wide as the later ones, so i wanted to know all the details on the diffrences in the earlyer and later 12 bolts befor i go looking for another rear end. or i might just try and find a carrier and reuse the gears.

That is not necessarily the case. Most of the time it is an adjustment factor. If the pins are shot/loose or the arms are bent, you may need to replace them, but most of the time there is nothing wrong with the old ones.

Uh yeah, you need to address that. Welded spiders are not exactly a street thing, I am opposed to them off-road too. Personally, I wouldn't re-use the gears either. The labor cost should be about the same either way and I wouldn't trust that the guy who welded the spiders to have removed the ring gear while doing the welding.

What you have is sometimes called a Lincoln Locker. It comes from the welder by Lincoln. They are not street friendly or much use for most regular driving.

LongHair is right, even though the hinges wear, with the rears sticking up after closed is a real simple way to fix that with a little adjusting of the hinge/fender mounts.

Re: picked up a '67...now ive got some questions

i know sometimes the hood hinges need adjusted, but wanted to atlest ask if the hinges are the same if i do end up needing to find other ones

and yes, i know the rear end is not a good thing to leave the way it is. it is number one on my list of things to fix on this thing.

why do you say i shouldnt reuse the ring and pinion? even if whoever did the custom job to the spider gears didnt remove the ring gear from the carrier what will that effect? will the weld splatter mess with somthing?

Here's the procedure posted by Huck:

To get the back down with existing hinges---open hood----loosen the three bolts that attach hinge to fender (both sides). Now push the hood up till the hinges stop moving, ---now push it open a bit more to preload the hinges. Tighten hinges. (two people make it a lot easier--hehehe) now carefully lower the hood--this may take a few adjustments to get it to sit just right (height wise). You may need to adjust the hood front to rear to allow for proper clearance with the cowl.

Yes, the weld splatter, the heat, etc.
The real point was that you will have to replace the carrier, which is going to require a gear set-up. For no more than the gears cost, I wouldn't spend the money to set-up a set that are not only used, but likely abused by the welding.
