The guy that lives next door to a good friend of mine is some old dude with a 70's nova and a 67-72 GMC truck with a cap just like the one pictured. I've never taken a photo. he won't sell either vehicle, "I'm gonna fix em up some day".

Re: i've seen at least one cap.. show me more
This was taken a few years ago. This is the only truck of our years I have liked with a cap on it. It didn't last long, member took it off shortly there after as he didn't like it on the truck.

Re: i've seen at least one cap.. show me more
What do y`all deeper southerners call them (just curious).I`m southern and we call`em caps,as well as further south. It ain`t a camper shell unless it`s used for camping.Towards the NW they call then canopies.Up north I`ve heard topper.A cap can have no windows and tool bins on the side, nothing you`d want to camp in.I have a Reading "steel work cap" on my`92 work truck. Are there any other names?
Here`s one I had in N.AZ: `69 Chevy ad:

Here's one that came to the Norwood meet. Mudder has it on his Smugmug site.
Take a look at this thread.

Re: i've seen at least one cap.. show me more
Here in Minnesota it is a "topper" like special-K pointed out. A camper is insulated and you sleep in it.
"I wish you'd get a topper for your truck so my stuff doesn't get wet when we drive up north." A hat like in Mudder's photo is a "baseball hat". Sometimes a "lid". "Nice lid." Or "Is that a new baseball hat?" However if you are in a rural, farming area it is a cap. "Dad put is town cap on I guess he needs to go pick something up in town." A carbonated soft drink like a Coke, Pepsi, or Dew is a "pop". "I'll buy you a can of pop." Before you drive, when you got a bicycle and your pal doesn't you give him a "buck". "Hey man, I don't want to walk. Can you give me a buck." When I worked in Phoenix a few years ago my co-workers giggled like a bunch of school girls when I said "boat". Which I thought was funny because when I hear somebody from farther north (Duluth, Fargo, etc.) say boat I giggle. Two summers ago when I was in Atlanta I asked a waitress for a glass of iced tea. She said "sweet?" I said what is that? Up north iced tea has sugar. Some of the guys from New Mexico said it is the opposite down south. If you want tea the way we drink it you need to order sweet tea. Last summer in New Orleans I was ready for the same question and sure enough the waitress there asked it. In Phoenix one weekend I went to a gas station and asked the attendant if they had a map of Nevada so I could drive up to Vegas to meet my brother for a weekend of drinking and gambling. The lady said "What?" I said Nevada, the state next to this one. She says "Oh. You mean Nevahda. We ain't got one of those." I left my car there and walked across the street to another station (because Phoenix in all my travels is THE worst city to drive in) and asked the lady there for a map of Nevada. She says "What?". I say "Do you have a map of Nevahda". Which she understood.

Re: i've seen at least one cap.. show me more
Special K, some of those "good ol' boys" down south call those caps.........Home!
A lot of people up here wear them to keep the snow out of the box. You can pick one up cheaper than a tonneau cover, and they stand up better to the snow loads.

Re: i've seen at least one cap.. show me more
I call them Canopies. My frandfather(originally from Nebraska) alsways called them that and that is what I call them. Not sure if that is a NW term or a Mid-West term.
I have one on my truck that is a '72 Alpine. I will try and post pictures of it today/tomorrow. |

Here is one I had saved, I think it is CG's truck. I really like the look with the cap, it is something you don't see very often.
