Question 366 big block?

Recently I was at a guys house fixing a couple of windows and the guy was talking about this dump truck his kid had gotten. It was somewhere around a70 C60. Somehow the trany had locked up suddenly{probly caught between gears] so he had found a diffrent truck for whatever he needed and would sell this one for $500. My son and I went over to check it out, even tho we didnt really need it.Well we got all excited when we saw it had a big block moter thinking we could sell it and scrap the rest,as the rest was pretty rusty but pretty heavy. The line tag in the glove box said it was a 366.Does anybody know anything about this moter? Could it be the same block as a 396 with a diffrent crank or heads?

Re: 366 big block?

It would be a tall block and would be different than a truck engine, all the pickup engine brackets and accesories will not bolt right up to a tall block i think.

Re: 366 big block?

3999293 - 366 - 1968-1976 - Four-bolt (tall-deck)
3969852 - 366 - 1968-1976 - Four-bolt (tall-deck)
3955274 - 366 - 1968-1976 - Four-bolt (tall-deck)
3937724 - 366 - 1968-1976 - Four-bolt (tall-deck)
364779 - 366 - 1968-1990 - Four-bolt (tall-deck)

Engine Size Stock Bore +.060"-over Stock Stroke
366 3.935" 3.995" 3.760"
396 4.094" 4.154" 3.760"
402 4.125" 4.185" 3.760"
427 4.250" 4.310" 3.760"
454 4.250" 4.310" 4.000"
502 4.468" 4.530" 4.000"

The fowllowing is from Mortec.com "We are asked about the 366 BBC "tall deck" truck engines often. Unfortunately they are not worth using as a performance motor. Safe overbore is .060" and that doesn't make much. They can be stroked but then you can't find pistons to match "off the shelf" and so custom pistons are required. You can "harvest" the heads, oil pan, valve covers, crank and rods from them to use on another larger bore Mark IV BBC. Otherwise, don't waste your time or money. The 366 makes a good low power heavy duty truck mule engine or an excellent boat anchor."

Re: 366 big block?

i wouldnt run one of those, you'll spend to much on parts and can have the same tourque and more power and driveability with a 454, or even a well built 400

Re: 366 big block?

the shop i use to work in swapped a 366 into a '80's 1-ton without much trouble. i believed we had to change water pump, pulleys, and motor mounts. the intakes are different on the tall decks and will not swap onto 454's etc. it replaced a 350, it was not a hot rod by any means but it pulled really well.

A standard block intake will work if you use the correct spacers. There are companies that make intakes for the tall deck blocks though.
