Engine Bogging

Hey all need a little help.

I got a 72 C10 with a built 383 Stroker (supposed to be around 425hp), I currently have a 600 holley on it due to gas prices and timing is set at 25 degrees ptdc. The problem is if I try to give it too much gas too fast it bogs and stutters, but if I ease into it it runs just fine. And like all of us hotrodders I want to be able to hammer it down off the line. Not sure if it's not getting enough gas with the smaller carb. I have a 750 dual feed I can put on but if there is anything that I can do with the 600 to have better throttle response I would prefer to keep it on.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Please clarify your timing setting. ptdc? is that past top dead center? Do you mean "before" top dead center or "after" tdc? If it's that far off it will be sluggish.

Re: Engine Bogging

Ok clarification, the 25 degrees is at idle speed and on my gun it has the degrees on the end of it and is adjustable. So when I have it set at 25 on my gun the line on the balancer is lined up with the 0 on the marker.

Re: Engine Bogging

That is alot of timing at idle. I usually have 8 to 10 at idle with total timing about 36 at 3000 3500. Are you checking it with vacuum advance blocked off?

Re: Engine Bogging

Yes the vacuum is blocked off, I have it at 25 because it idled pretty good at that, if I go below 15 it tries to die on me and the idle is set at 900 rpm right now.

Re: Engine Bogging

Have you had the distributor cap off lately? Kinda sounds like an advance spring might be broken. Is it hard to start when the motor is warm

Re: Engine Bogging

Ok the distributor is pretty much junk, pulled it out and gear is not in the greatest shape and the springs are very loose. Ordered a new dist so hopefully that will help.
