10 or 12 bolt.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a....php?f=50&a=17
I am wanting to get a 12 bolt rear end for my 83. but someone told me that the 10 bolt would do what a 12 bolt would. I was wanting to see what you all thought about that.

Re: 10 or 12 bolt.
At one point I was offered a good deal on a 12 bolt. I talked to a friend who is a mechanic, and who used to own a Chevy truck junkyard. He said that, in his opinion, the 10 bolt was about as strong as the 12 bolt that came in these trucks, but that the parts for the 10 bolts were cheaper and more plentiful. He recommended sticking with what I have, so I did.

Re: 10 or 12 bolt.
People say that there is no difference in strength, but I have my own opinion on the quality. I have 12 bolt units in my truck and my Son's truck and with the posi-units they have given no problems in many years. I think the 12 bolts are stronger.

Re: 10 or 12 bolt.
the 10 bolts have a larger diameter pinion shaft but i think the 12 bolts have larger diameter axles and obviously ring gear.

Re: 10 or 12 bolt.
the 8.5 10 bolts to 12 bolts are like the ford 8.8 to 9", they are almost as strong but yet not as strong, your right the 8.5s has more performance parts cheaper because im pretty sure its what the G bodys used, and the second gen camaro's, but personally im putting a 70 ss big block 3.73 under my 80, why, because 12 bolts are stronger, plus every 70-73 guy is gonna wanna steal it from out underneath me.
