Windshield install question
Hello All, haven't written in a long time, hope to do more in the future. I got to keep this brief. When installing deluxe trim windshield, what procedure is best used to get glass, trim, and rubber in. I've heard put everything together and use rope. Can the stainless trim be installed after windshield is installed? Some say to put rubber on cab then put glass in. I'm still waiting on trim to be delivered so we have a little time to drive ourselves crazy figuring this out, ha! Any help is much appreciated. Below are a few pics of the LONG, LONG journey. I've got to be on road by May 8, my daughter is graduating from college. I've already missed the high school graduation deadline, but that's another story.

Re: Windshield install question
I just installed mine back over Christmas. If you have a helper it's not to bad. I had two.
Lay the rubber out and install windsheild then trim. Make sure the edge of the trim catches the rubbers edge to hold it in place. If it doesn't you will know because the trim will keep popping back off, once it's right it will stay in the groove. It took about a hour to get it right. I installed the windsheild bottom first and had a heck of a time with the two upper corner's. I would get the top in first and with the rope work your way around to the middle of the bottom. With your helper pushing easley on the outside of the rubber to make it go in. Wet the rubber down with some soap and water too before you start.

Re: Windshield install question
First off great to see another 71 GMC. And it looks good too. Like Andy said but would add take your new seal lay it out in the warm sun for an hr before out of the package. And use 3 folks two outside the cab.

Re: Windshield install question
No problem good luck with it. Nice looking truck. You will have to get the tops corner's in good to start with but after that it should go in with no problems.
Back glass is the same way if you have the trim for it too!

Re: Windshield install question
Go see the instructions at Pauls GMC. SHop manual says start at the bottom. Tried and I couldn't get the top corners to go in. Pauls has you start with the top. Make sure to get the corners in before tilting the windshield down. From there just go slow and pull the rope/ cord out making sure the seal lip pulls over the pinchweld.
It helps to have a couple of people to help hold push guide etc. Just be sure they don't push too hard and only with the palms of their hands not fingertips. There are a few threads on windshield installs here you can find with a search as well. |

Re: Windshield install question
On my son's Burb we used Jergens "Original Scent" skin creme on the seal and windshield opening. It does not dry out for a long time and when finished with the job it washes off easily with window cleaner.
Installing the chrome in the groove can be tricky. The chrome must be straight or it will pop out. The chrome is installed onto the seal with the seal in place around the windshield. The groove in the seal has to be opened up as you install the chrome. The corner clips can be installed onto the chrome if they fall off in the process if you are carefull. We would have preferred to have a glass installer install the windshield but it seems to be a lost art in this area. We had trouble getting someone competent to do the job. We put the rope at the bottom of the windshield when installing working the corners in at the top. Jim
