wire up a neutral safety swith?

swapping from 3 on the tree to auto. I have the tilt, shifter linkage and etc. Today I pulled the old column and noticed I only have the plug for the reverse lights.... does anyone have diagram or pictures of how to wire the saftey switch? I already sold my parts truck. I was sure I had everything I needed.... Thats my luck.

Thanks in advance.

Easiest way to do this is cut the purple wire to ignition switch, splice both cut ends with enough wire to reach nuetral switch, plug each wire to the 2 mail ends that are stacked evenly over each other.

This probably isn't going to help you a damn bit, but it might give you some insight; so I'm going to jump in, right or wrong.

My Chevy originally had a "granny" 4 spd. The PO, my son, swapped that for a TH350, with an after market shifter.
I have no back up light switch (or back up lights, for that matter), or a neutral safety switch.

What it comes down to is, how many times are you really going to try to start your truck when it's not in Park, or Neutral?

Not very often in my experience.

And, believe me, I'm not trying to be a smart a$$.
If the truck is in gear, it's probably running; so you won't be trying to start it.

I hope this helped a little bit.

Not sure about the wiring, but i had to search for 3 months for the 3 on the tree backup switch. Just a heads up, those are rare and you should hang onto it.

Re: wire up a neutral safety swith?

I kinda agree... Mine is by passed on both of my trucks (mad the van column install easier)
And i have never foired it up in gear. And if I am ever stupid enough to shut it off in gear and not put it in park, then I deserve it for being retarded.

I agree, I will probably never start it in gear. I just like things done correctly or as safe as possible. Its that one time my wife decides to drive the truck and accidently runs over the neighbors kid or something.
Is the purple ignition wire the one the factory uses?

Re: wire up a neutral safety swith?

The purple #10 wire that goes to the starter is the one that you will want to interrupt. You can make the cut at the fuse panel area so your wires to the neutral safety switch don't have to be very long. I used a pigtail and plug off an old harness to cut the switch in so that the colors would match. It makes an easy installation.

Re: wire up a neutral safety swith?

I am doing a three on the tree swap to an auto on the floor, but I am not changing columns. Can I create an on/off toggle from the two wires that are part of the back up light part of the switch? What should I do about the neutral safety switch?
