using newer style starter

i was just wondering if anybody has used the 95-99 (i think) starters on their sbc. i liked them since they are smaller and lighter and dont require shimming. im just not sure if they will work and older gen sbc.

im not sure but i dont think the block has the same starter mounts
and if it is able to bolt up correctly it should work just fine

if you want a newer lighter starter with no shims, try a hitatchi or procomp 3hp starter... they only weigh about 7-10lbs and are way more dependable. only cost from 70-150 dollars to boot!

i wouldnt try using a newer starter. Just from my starter experience use what is recomended for your engine. The first two years i had my camaro i went through about 10 starters and 5 flexplates. The first 6 or 7 starters were junk yard ones and they would last a few months or less and the teeth would start to grind and eventually tear up my flexplate. So i decided to buy a new starter and flexplate after all of the junkyard starters going bad and within 2 weeks the new stuff was junk. We ended up putting two more new starters in it because they were guaranteed and they both went out. Finally my stepdad went to pickup my 4th new starter and they said he couldnt get another one. He asked to see there computer to see what starter they had been selling me and it was a metric starter and he told them my engine in my car was a 1968 small block and they said but you said the car was an 86. So he told them to give him the correct starter and they did. Its been fine ever since.

I have one in my M/H with a 454, and one in my Blazer with a done sb 400. They are great! With new old school high torques, both engines were hard to start when hot. Now they turn over and start no problem. On one occasion my alt packed it in. I didn't have enough power to run my tunes, but the engine still cranked and started. My blazer is automatic, and I go wheeling to places out in the middle of nowhere, so being these starters are very small and light, its easy for me to take a spare,,,,,,,,,,just in case. You just need shorter mounting bolts that are standard thread.

I use one and love it. A heck of alot easier to hold up with one hand when putting it in, more exhaust clearance, no more heat soaked windings (its a permanent magnet). Just make sure you get the mounting bolts that are for that starter.
