Question 1963 GMC Dash Question

I'm painting the interior of my truck soon and wanted to find out if the two outer holes on the right side of the steering wheel are stock. The truck came with shaved door handles and the two blank holes in my picture had switches mounted in them (at least one of them is uneven and looks like it was drilled out). I've also had trouble finding pictures of any 60-63 GMC dashes to compare, but maybe I haven't looked that hard. Also, I included a Chevy dash from LMC. Any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

I've seen these on 6066 before, but I'm still unsure what's what.

- The top left picture would seem there's only the ignition switch and cigarette lighter, however if you look close, there seems to be a small plug to the left of the ignition switch.

- In the other two pictures the column is obstructing our view, but they too look to have plug(s) as well.

Confused I am Master Yoda!

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

I've got those same holes on my truck, the po moved the choke controll over to the ignition side, so he used the lighter hole.

Open hole next to the column was throttle cable. The one on the right I don't recall, it's been too many years. You would need an accessory book, it does look like a factory hole.

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

That's encouraging to know my dash may not have been hacked to hell (minus the radio opening). Thanks for the help.

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

this is the dash on my 66 GMC, same plugs, except that the PO moved the choke cable fro the door side over to the ignition side, weird, now that this is posted in the right post, I've also got those holes. I have no idea what they're for though. Was there any kind of accersoies that would utilize those?

I noticed the radio hack in the other thread. I would find a donor and weld in a patch.

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

mine is the same as sls_06ion's, except where he has a choke, I have a factory looking rubber piece to cover the hole. My choke was third from the right like the diagram shows.

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

Welcome Tim, from BC.

About the cut radio opening, Classic Parts has a repair panel for that (part number 44-177). It's for a Chevy, but I think (looking at my GMC) that the area right around the radio is correct.

About the switches, I have some "extra" holes I need to fill also. However, these trucks had dealer installed items, in my case I have a 4-way flasher switch. I think the little 1/4 or 3/8 plugged holes were there as guides for these dealer switches and were drilled out appropriately.

Re: 1963 GMC Dash Question

Cool, thanks for the pics and the welcome.

Now that I've looked closer at my panel, I think the hole on the farthest right was drilled out for a second shaved door handle pull switch. So...based on all the feedback I've received it seems the factory had three positions on either side; right side being possible throttle cable, ignition switch, and cigarette lighter in that order. I think I'll fill in the forth hole which I don't believe was original.

As for the hacked to hell radio opening...man I don't want to deal with that! Urggg!

Thanks again.
