Motor Coming Together-Ned Advice

Im re assembling a motor its 468 cubic inches for my 62 Wagon, its already a new motor but with stock componets.Ill be putting on the large oval port 049 Heads from a 73 454,and for nostalgia purposes i want to run the Edelbrock dual quad intake, with the 500 cfm carbs they come with the dual quad calibration kit,and have the linkage and fuel line.My dilemma is camshaft choice its recommends Performer Plus Cam Kit #2162 Adv Duration int 292 exh 302 int @.050 is 218 and 228 @exh @cam .295 both int and exh, valve both @.500 but i believe this is closer to a stock idle,id like a somewhat rough idle.please correct me if im wrong?or it recommends Torker Plus Kit but im not gonna be doing 2500-6500 rpm blasts.I like the RPM Cam sounds nastier but maybe not a good combo with intake? its Adv Duration is 300 exh 306 int@ .050 240 exh 246 cam@ .330 exh .337 valve int @ .560 exh .573 all this is in a very heavy car with 3.55 gears and a Turdo350 trans.maybe id be better off with just a RPM intake, but i really want the dual quad under the hood.Or a crossram if anyone has one!!!!!$$$i should probably stick to the Performer Plus recommendation, but i love that idle, but id rather have GO then sound/show.Anyone running any of the Edelbrock cams,or should i go with someone else.Ive had luck with the plain old Cranes.hmmm any suggests?

IMO, you will be most unhappy with that bigger camshaft. The 218/228 at .050 is a perfect mild street cam for a big block.

RAT-- I BUILT A 468 FOR MY SHORT FLEET. O49 HEADS WERE MY CHOICE. I PORTED & POLISHED THEM & OPENED UP THE VALVE SIZE. I USED .280 FORGED TRW POPUP PISTONS,& A COMP. CAMS 280H MAGNUM SERIES CAM .230 DUR. .520 LIFT. IT RAN LIKE A CUT CAT, WITH A REAL NICE RUMPETY RUMP IDLE. BUT THE CAM WENT FLAT AFTER ONLY 5000 MILES, & I JUST YANKED THE MOTOR. I HAVE WAY TO MUCH MONEY IN IT NOT TO HOT TANK IT & REPLACE THE BEARINGS. NEEDLESS TO SAY I WONT BE USING ANOTHER COMP CAM WHEN I PUT IT BACK TOGETHER, BUT THE SIZE WAS PERFECT FOR ME. I THINK I'LL GO WITH EITHER A ISKY OR A LUNATI NEXT( MAYBE A ROLLER). DUAL CARBS SURE ARE COOL LOOKING, BUT I WENT WITH A 800 CFM EDELBROCK ON A PERFORMER RPM MANIFOLD. GOOD LUCK WITH IT & IF THERES ANYTHING I CAN HELP YOU WITH, DROP ME A LINE.
JOHN

Thanks guys,
Junkyard ive heard that about Comp.to the point were i convinced my step-brother he bought a Lunati for his 455.but one hell regret when it comes time for his PB booster to work, and 1200 RPM idle, and lack of torque but the OLds motor already has like 510ft pounds stock, and hes got a 780 Holley now,i tried to say go smaller but he wanted it to sound bad,and his dad agreed,my step dad is in the day of a 283 4.56 gears, and the nastiest cam that they make, and a 4spd.Ive debated on the dual carb setup,i have a 800 cfm Edelbrock in the box.the dual carb setup just adds money over $400 in carbs,$60 in Linkage,$40 in fuel line$300 intake verse a $180 intake,a carb i got, stock linkage, and fuel line.but i wanted that nostalgia look to go with those cast BB Edelbrock valve covers, they are old im guessing from 65 they arent aluminum like the other ones, maybe pot metal???very heavy to,and have some different edelbrock logo ones,im assuming a early design.Ill probably go with the smaller cam maybe give up some lumpy idle, keep it more quite so that big old station wagon roasts up both tires and turns sideways, next to the 17 year old punk in his jacked up Camaro with shiny Cragars and Flowtech Header stickers, and a Holley one or 2 all over the windows and bad 305 license plate.I got in a sorta race today with him with his 79 or so Camaro it said on back window big bad 305 big block in some stickers, across the whole window,he reved it at light,i laughed -it pissed him off light turned green,he took off fast as he could,COUGH then he was trying to start it.i said good luck pick up a Power Valve on your way home!!!My truck isnt the fastest and it looks not the greatest but it has the right combo of parts in that 402 and it has a small 600 Edelbrock and it seems to love it,lots of torque and tire spinning.I had the 750 on their but it didnt run aswell, and lost some mpg.so i said its only a daily beater, ill put the little one back on.Hmmm back to the Wagon,a new 502 would be nice ready to go. did someone say credit card? nope wasnt wife!!!

Its pretty hard to kill the bottom end tork in a BB. I ran a "generic rat", .030 over 455 Olds in the longhorn with an Engle cam (.226/.230 @ .050 .496/.512 lift) ......the idle was pretty tame. on the top, i had a torker/800dp holley. the combo ran against a 2200-2300 stall/400T, & 3.40 gears......the truck weighs 4000 lbs, & it didnt have any problems with low end tork! goodluck....crazy AL
