column shift

i heard a little rumor about four and even five speed column shifters being manufactured in asia through the nineties. i know it sounds silly, but i want a four speed and i want my girl to be able to sit right next to me... ergo my new quest for the elusive and mystical four speed column shift. anyone heard about this, or am i just crazy?

Hey man, I'm with you... I was thinking of just having the 4 forward gears controlled by the column, then have a separate reverse lever elsewhere. I know I've seen competition ratchet shifters with a seperate reverse lever.

Been meaning to do some research on this, so maybe someone will have some info.

Back in high school I sometimes drove a dodge truck,that when you shifted to reverse the shifter would go almost to the middle of the seat.When my girlfriend sat next to me it was like a legit reason to put my hands between her legs.Aaah the thoughts of a teenage boy!

Yeah, my friend loves that 'feature' of his floor shifter.

i seriously considered putting in the floor shifter for that very reason.

I know european cars had 4 speed, but never heard of a 5 speed on the column
You could go 4 speed on the column with the existing speed shifter, then use a PTO push/pull knob for the reverse gear.
Personally, I would put zero effort into a column shifter, and look at putting it on the floor. But that's me.

Most of the commercial vehicles in Japan had the 4 or 5 speed on the column when I lived there in the 70s and 80s. It was weird to say the least. The really bad part is some were like a 3 speed pattern, with 4/5 tacked on, while others had the normal 4 speed pattern with 5th opposite reverse.

At one time I had a '67 short step that I put my extra Muncie 4 speed in and like Andy said, I used the three speed shifter for the 4 forward gears and a choke cable for reverse. It worked really good but you had to remember to put the column shifter in neutral before pulling the choke knob out or you would go nowhere fast....
