oil pan not coming off

hey guys, i was going to change the gaskets on the oil pan the other day and after i got all the bolts off i relized it was hitting the flywheel and cant come out. this is the first time i have done this when the engine is in the truck. How do you get it out?

you need to have the motor jacked up 3-4" for you to drop the pan enough to clear the oil pickup out of the sump

Just the side mounts.Watch yourfan blade so that it does not hit rad.Everything else will move enough. Slow and easy. Jack off the front balancer.

I think you only need to do the motor mounts. Be careful where you jack it up.
This was my turning point when I ended up pulling the motor....

Make sure it cant slip off while your working on the pan, it might be near impossible to jack it up while your arm is crushed under the motor.

front end is down to bare timing chain so no problems there, where should i put the jack?

If have to, rent or buy an engine hoist. They aren't that expensive and much safer. If you jack it up by the balancer you may damage it to the point that you will get an engine vibration or worse.

while I know jacking the engine up by the ballancer gets done all the time, that's a LOT of weight resting on the end of the crank. I would rent/borrow the hoist.

the engine hoist sounds good till you're under the truck trying to change the pan and you have to deal with the stabilizer legs/ i prefer undoing the towers from the frame carefully jacking on the oilpan (block of 2x10 then you take a couple of short pieces of 2x4 and place between frame rail and towers and the oilpan will come right out//thats the way the chevy service manual describes how to do the job

I've never had a problem with the legs on my hoist. They are splayed. The method with the wood sounds great too.

I got mine out by undoing the trans. mount and jacking up the trans.

Thats how mine started a year ago, but I decided to yank the motor when I couldnt drop the oil pan. After the pan is off you might as well put in a fresh oil pump and rear main seal.
I was going to put fresh gaskets and new valve seals while the motor was out when I found a broken valve stem.
I'm still pulling things apart to this day.
I have everything ready to go back in as soon as my fire wall is painted.

I just took off one motor mount, took a small bottle jack in between the exuast manifold and the cross member, and that gave me enough clearence to get the pan out.

It rocked the motor over with no problem.
