5 speed swap
took the truck to the swap meet yesterday which is a couple towns over by way of a secondary highway, i'm not really diggin the 3000ish rpm at 50mph. my buddy has a 92 1500 with a 4.3 and a 5 speed, hes pulling that for an lt1/4l60e and i'd love to put that tranny in mine. i know i need to get a tranny crossmember, mine has the cast iron bellhousing so the tranny just hangs out in space, not sure if i can use my mechanical clutch linkage or have to make it hydraulic, also not sure if the 5 speed is longer or if it has a different output shaft. hell i'm not even sure what it is its either a borg warner or the gm cast iron unit, most likely the borg being behind a 4.3.
anyone done this or something similar? theres no way an auto is going in there, so sick of driving automatics.

Re: 5 speed swap
it's probably the NV3500. they'll hold up to around 250 HP or a little more. the speedo is electric also. you will have to convert to a hydraulic setup because of the clutch fork being on the right side.

Re: 5 speed swap
yea it's a rust free wagon. it's a 4.1 v6 and th200. it's a nice cruiser but it's down a cylinder and i don't have any idea on why it's down.

Re: 5 speed swap
btw welcome from northern NH. i'm about 11/2-2 hours away.
i'm not sure if the 5speed will bolt up to the 292 without some kind of adapter. if it comes out of a 4.3 or 5.7 and you have a 350 it'll bolt up with no problems. i converted my 88 from auto to a 5 speed and the hydraulics aren't cheap.

Re: 5 speed swap
How was Amherst? We used to come down from Maine, but it seemed to be drying up. Last time we were there it wasn't at all like it used to be.
I put a T5 behind a 292 and used the original clutch linkage and no extra crossmember. I needed to make a bushing to make the T5 bearing retainer fit the 292 bell housing. (The retainer OD was 5/8" smaller than the bell housing ID) With my third member ratio the T5 allows 65 MPH at 2100 RPM. I don't know how this compares to the trans you're thinking about, but this sure made my C20 a lot more fun to drive. Welcome aboard!

Re: 5 speed swap
250 and 292's are the same bellhousing as a v8 so i know thats not a problem, if i need to go hydraulic i'll get the whole setup from that donor truck and fashion it to my pedal.
i do have a t5 i just picked up, its from a mustang but a buddy of mine has a mustang t5 in his malibu, its a little more work but not a disaster like you'd think, in a malibu anyway. amherst was ok but with the blah weather and carlisle going on it wasnt to full capacity, its very weather dependent i've found.
