Another Dumb question from a sorta newbie.
Ive had my ole '71 for 2 years now, ended up having to replace the radiator two weekends ago (dang thing split down the seam between the tank and core). Friend of mine had a 2-core radiator out of a '69 Chevelle he used to own. It works great, truck gets alittle warm but cools right back off (had to replace the water pump and thermostat last December after some idiot stole the original alternator, bracket and battery, put in a long pump for a 74 and moved the alternator to the right hand side.) Anyways, I got a fan shroud from another friend of mine that has an old 67 or 68 sitting out in the back of his farm, looked practically brand new except for one thing........damned thing got warped sitting out in the sun (imagine that) didnt find that until I installed it and my flex fan kept hitting the damned thing.
So..........the long and short of it...................Im looking to upgrade to an electric fan (I know in the past Ive been on the "dummy" side of this upgrade but am slowly being converted that and getting tired of the growling from time to time of the fan hitting that shroud.) I've done a search for ideas for swapping over to the electric fan, and found alot of info except for one? I still have.......................since some of the fans have thermostats on them and require someway of determining when the engine is getting warm i.e a thermo probe mounted either in the thermostat housing or in the manifold, can I hook that lead from the fan thermo unit to the coolant temp sensor on the side of the block? Or should I just drill and tap a hole in the water neck for a pyrometer (I think thats qwhat its called)? Any and all help would be appreciated..................nopt sure what Im going to go with as for a fan but no offense to the Nissan setup or anything else scavenged but Im gonna go new with this setup (trucks been hacked up enough). Thanks

Re: Another Dumb question from a sorta newbie.
I would never recomend installing the sensor anywhere on the engine. It needs to be in the radiator. We've installed many many electric fans on everything from pick ups to p/30 step vans at work, and I butted heads with a few people on this, and they ended up being wrong with overheating trucks. Rewired it the way I told them to, and the trucks NEVER came back for cooling issues again.

The temperture senor/switch should be mounted in the radiator fins near the top.
The one I have I got from a local auto parts store. Danny |

Re: Another Dumb question from a sorta newbie.
Wouldn't the motor be hotter than the rad, though? I just figured the H2O in the rad would be cooler, therefore cause the fans to come on later and allow the motor to get hotter? Either way I am not an expert but I do know if you can get a lower switch temp, that is better 160-170 as apposed to 190-200. BTW a 3-row for out trucks is better than the one you have and can be had for about $200, then you should be good to go with no overheating at all.

Re: Another Dumb question from a sorta newbie.
I have a 3 core that I got for $30 from the local machinist.....................I havent tested it yet but it looks ok. The truck right now doesnt really overheat it goes up to abit above normal on the guage then drops back and this is at idle, while moving the guage stay's in the normal range.
As for the sensor Im guessing that if its placed next to the inlet on the radiator when the hot coolant comes in from the thermostat it will kick the fans on....right?

Re: Another Dumb question from a sorta newbie.
Ok DUH I reread the thread and noticed someone had already answer the location question ( glad I didnt say I assumed ).
WIll this be enough to keep air going through my radiator? http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=FLX%2D394&N=700+4294924500+4294839058+4294838842+400226+115&autovie w=sku Ok I think that worked.
