Another one came home
Kurt (VtBlazer) and I took a drive today, to recover a shop truck my Dad and I restored. My Dad used this for his business and this was the last vehicle he and I worked on. It's kind of funny, he bought it new, sold it and bought it back years later and we restored it. I just did the same thing... at least the buying and selling part.
It's a 70 GMC C1500 Custom (Super?). NO PS, NO PB... my Dad didn't believe in em. It'll get new rockers, a cab corner and a driver's side fender. I almost want to cry, when I last saw this truck, it was PERFECT, chrome with deep gloss black paint, red interior and red bed liner. Phase one of this restoration will be brakes and front end work. Right now, there's barely any hydraulic pressure in the brake system, I suspect there's a leak in one of the lines. I'll be bending up all new stainless lines. I also have to charge up the battery and straighten out the exhaust. I may also convert the M22 my Dad installed in it to an auto. Then drive it for a while. I'll do the rockers and schtuff when I have Shuffling, my 4wd project is done. I don't want this to turn into a frame off like the rest of my projects. So, it's a good running 350, M22 column shifted trans, 12B rear. When we restored it, we swapped in 72 brakes to get disks in the front. All the trim stays. It was a pretty shatty, cold rainy day in the NE weather-wise but a perfect day for a long drive to save another piece of history.
In this case I like the 'personnel history' side of the story best, glad you got it back Jon.  Sweet little truck for sure, enjoy it!

I almost had a chance to keep a 72 chevelle in the family but the family member sold it for $3500 the day before I was to get it, after they were basically given it by another family member ($750)... I was a little heated but its gone now...

great back-story.
I have a '69 GMC i inherited from my dad that was originally going to be resto-modded. He recently passed, so i have changed plans and its going to be a semi-correct resto piece like yours (i say semi-correct because i still want to powdercoat the frame and install discs on the front)

Grendel,
this is cool story and you get your dads truck back. I'm sure it isn't going anywhere now  I have a similar situation,my dad bought a 71 shortbed in 92 right before he passed away and I sold it about 5 years ago have regreted it ever since. I hope I get lucky one day and can get it back too.Ray

Ok, so the fenders on this are toast.
I have a decent set of 68 Chevy fenders. I've read ( and I am not sure about it) that the 68 fenders will fit a 69-72 GMC? Is that accurate? (it would save me from buying more sheet metal.) I need a radiator support, two inner fenders, probably inner rockers, outer rockers, a passenger side cab corner, kick panels, floor patches and probably both "dog legs" as well as two firewall cab patches

I think this is awesome.And,yes.`68 Chevy fenders are actually 68-72 GMC fenders in disguise.

Took this for a ride down to the welding supply store.
It's amazing what brakes and some fresh gas will do. Granted, I am nervous as I installed a power booster, master cylinder and proportioning valve for Disk front brakes and I have drums up front... She does stop on a dime though I adjusted all the brakes out yesterday, looks like the rears were never adjusted after install. |
