tow hooks?

Okay, I've missed something along the way...What's the big deal with the factory tow hooks? I see them going for $100+ a pair! Are they that rare of an option?

Re: tow hooks?

Yes, rare enough to bring quite a price. I've never seen a pair in person.

Heck, $100 is pretty cheap - see certain years pushing the $400 range if you can believe that.

Re: tow hooks?

YJ is right, $100 or less jump on them. 67/68 expect them
around $150 a set, 69-72 around $250, 72 only $400+++

I have a set listed for $600 + shipping and still have them

(I really don't want to sell them, can you tell )

They are most valuable when you are stuck and need pulled.

Re: tow hooks?

I'm getting ready to put my 69-72 hooks on. Does anyone have measurements for mounting the hooks? Picture? I was thinking that the tips of the hooks would point in to the center of the truck when mounted, is that correct?

Re: tow hooks?

Thats how mine are mounted, the tips point outwards, but I have no idea if that is how they are supposed to be.

Re: tow hooks?

Dang, didn't realize all that! Think I'll keep my eyes open in these junkyards & backyards around here. Is there only certain setups they came on, like K20s, or could they have been an option on anything?

Re: tow hooks?

I would guess 4wd (K-10 and K20) but not sure. Mine is a K10 and it has them on the glovebox label...

Re: tow hooks?

They were available on 2wds also. The holes are in the 4wd frame and only in 2wd frames if it came with hooks. There were rear hooks which are more rare.

Tim, any idea why the rear hooks are so rare?
Can't say as if I've ever seen em. I'd love to see a pair mounted, anyone got any pics of em?

Re: tow hooks?

I guess no one ordered them. They make more sense on the back.Usually when you`re stuck the problem is you can`t go forward. When you pull someone out you usually pull from behind.I guess most 4wds had step bumpers and guys use the hitch. Not always healthy for a bumper, though.Although, the 67-71 step bumpers could take about anything and back then it was expected to get a tweak or two on your truck.

Re: tow hooks?

I`ve seen them on original trucks and lited as an option.I sold some hooks to a guy with a restored original 2wd GMC 3/4t and he has no holes. So,we will drill them out from measurements off my 4wd.
I`m thinking I might use some pre-69 hooks I have on the rear of my K/30 project. It depends on how I go with bumpers, hitch, whatever.

Re: tow hooks?

They are listed on the SPI-sheet-thingy from the truck that had donated its frame to my 4x4 ( This was a previous owner thing... not me; the cab is a '67 and the frame is whatever the sheet says.. )

I had a pair on a 70 C30 longhorn (note the C and not K). They were listed on the sticker in the glove box. I still have them, and the truck is gone.

If it's an original 72 "K" frame then the factory bolt holes should already be in the front frame horns, if its 71 and prior "K" frame then no holes unless it came with or had hooks at some point.
