Did our trucks have Choke Cable as option?

One of my parts trucks has a Choke Cable under the dash just to the left of the steering wheel.

Is this something that would have been dealer/factory installed or an aftermarket item? The knob has a white C on a black Knob.

I took a photo but need to get them downloaded.

Just looking for an expert opinion....

Thanks,

67 and 68 had it standard in the gauge cluster.

If it is where you said, it was aftermarket, which was VERY common for these trucks as the automatic chocks of those days did leave something to be desired if they were not in top notch form.

My dad's 71 had the choke mounted where you said, and had a white C on the handle. It also had a manual choke set-up for a quadrajet. I always assumed it was dealer add on.

My 68 had a divorced choke on the intake and a choke delete "GM" plate on the dash bezel.

Re: Did our trucks have Choke Cable as option?

A lot of the people that bought these trucks hated automatic chokes. Especially the older guys. They were used to trucks having a manual choke and they wanted the control.

My 68 came with a manual choke on the cluster and my 69 had an add on when I bought it.

The older automatic chokes were controlled by a coil on the exhaust or intake manifold with a link to the choke. They weren't super reliable. Newer trucks had the electric one installed which was a little better. But even then, some guys would disconnect them and install a manual one.

My dad was one of those that didn't like auto anything in a car or truck.

Re: Did our trucks have Choke Cable as option?

I guess I'm one of those old guys who hate automatic chokes. I retrofitted one from LMC onto the Carter AFB 600 CFM in my '71 Jimmy. I drilled out a hole in the plastic dash bezel and used the factory mounting hole.
It looked stock under the Wiper knob, like a '68, almost.
The LMC choke cable came apart after 9 years where the ferrule gets
crimped to the cable sheath. I screwed it up trying to fix it. So now I have a new one on order.
A cable with a "C" on the knob would be from a '66 or earlier Chevy, or just generic. I understand you can still get one from the John Deere dealer. Go figure.
One reason I prefer a manual choke is that the automatics sometimes go off at the wrong time and/or won't go on when you do need it. Especially if you go around in mountains and deserts where extremes of temperature, altitude and atmospheric pressure can change rapidly.

Hopefully you won't loan it out to a buddy or relative and forget to let them know. Gas is expensive these days...

If you have a fishing boat, don't ever let him rewrap you steering cables. My brother in law did that once and wrapped them backwards. Turn to the right and boat went left. Darned near killed us!

Yeah the guy before me but a cable on the passenger side right in line of where the choke is on the carb. I figured that wasn't stock.
