Bench wont fold up

I've been trying to fold the bench seat foward in my truck, but it won't budge, and I can't find and levers or knobs or nothing to pull on to make it fold foward so I can have access to get behind the seat. Now I'm thinking it does NOT fold foward at. Is that right? Do some bench seats not fold foward or is there some kind of trick to this? I'm fixin to just unbolt the whole seat and take it all out unless I'm missing something here. What makes me think it folds forward is that the previous owner has stuff back in there behind it, but then again...maybe that's why he left it back there lol. 71 GMC

Re: Bench wont fold up

My seat has wingnuts you have to unscrew before folding it forward, but that's in a '67. I don't know if it's the same as yours.

Re: Bench wont fold up

My 71 GMC doesn't fold

My 67 Chevy does

Don't know if there was a cut off year I remember something about the folding seats not being safe in crashes

Re: Bench wont fold up

As far as I have seen, the majority don't fold. I have heard that some trucks came with a lever to unlatch but I haven't found them.

What some have done is remove one of the two bolts so that it will fold forward. Or you can put wing nuts like kyull67's.

Be aware that if they are the original bolts, they can be a bear to remove. At least mine were. Now that I've got a seat that folds, I really don't have any reason to do it..

Re: Bench wont fold up

most don't... in 67 and 68, it seems the stripped down trucks would fold.
Removing those bolts, or adding wing nuts, will probably mess up the vinal on the side of the seat.

Here's a pic of my folding bench. Look at the triangle shaped piece above the seat belt. You lift that up to fold the seat forward.

Jim... I've never seen a seat that looked anything like that stock in a 67 - 72. Any idea what it came out of?

Re: Bench wont fold up

I always assumed it was from a 67/68. It was in the truck when I bought it. Maybe not?

Re: Bench wont fold up

That is a seat out of a Ford Pickup. I read somewhere that they fit and offer a few extra inches of legroom over the stock bench seat. Here is a pic of the seat in my wrecked 1990 F150:

Wow! I never would have thought that! The next time I go to the junkyard I'll have to check the 1990 models. Somebody must have used our truck floor mounts and attached them to the bench unless they are the same. This is good info to know for somebody looking for a seat! Well after checking around on the net it appears to be from the 87-91' model years of F%$D trucks.

A ford seat??...a ford seat??...Come on guys...a ford seat has more leg room because people who drive fords have bigger legs from doing all that walking and pushing.

Re: Bench wont fold up

I was told by the owner of VintageChevyTrucks.com that they stopped making the folding seat in 1969. The reason was the seat folding forward during hard braking and head on crashes.

I know in cars, starting in 68 the seat backs had to latch.

Re: Bench wont fold up

In my '72 I took the top bolt out of the side bracket and used one of those Pins with the key ring thing on it in place of the bolt. It keeps it stationary, until I pull the pin and folded the seat forward. Worked for me.
