Special Edition GMC Trucks

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but not really to 73-87 trucks. I'm currently living in western Washington where these trucks are still plentiful. I am in the Navy and just moved from Connecticut where my '84 was the only truck in the state that wasn't rusted out. Here non-rusty trucks are still dime a dozen.

Anyhow, I have four of these trucks including a 1975 Gentleman Jim, an 84 SW 4x4, an 86 SW 2wd and an 87 SW 2wd diesel (25 mpg!).

I'd really like to find some more info on the special edition trucks GMC made in the 70s such as the Gentleman Jim, the Beau James, the Indy Hauler trucks and the Desert Fox. Does anyone own one of these and have more info, brochures pictures etc?

I'm putting together a web site and will of course post a link when its up.

Welcome ElGracho.

I had a link in my favorites to a site, that had all the info for these special trucks.

Brandon (79BIG10) gave it to me. But now I forgot. I'm sure he'll post and give the link to it.

Captkaos has some detailed information about those trucks. He's posted literature and pictures of them. Gentleman Jim and Beau James were just special production packages. The Indy Hauler trucks and other 454 trucks were nothing but prototypes. I think only the Indy Hauler made production in limited numbers. The yellow 454 would be listed as the fastest production truck in '78 or '79 if it was availble to the public. Since it was not the Dodge Lil Red Express is listed as the fastest production truck of the time.

Oh, I got a LMC catalogue that has a picture of a Indy Hauler. It's got the Pontiac firebird on the hood. The package looks really sweet.

Personal question for you. If you are in the Navy and were in Connecticut and now moved to western Washington, I'm guessing you're a submariner. Is that right? I was a submariner for over 4 years. Got out in '96. Spent some training time in Groton, CT.

Really all the special edition trucks were just special packages. None of these trucks were significantly different than the regular production trucks except for the trim and paint.

Do you mean as 454 trucks or in general? I have personally seen 454 equipped Gentleman Jims (one in Oregon, one in Montana)

I have looked at both of these sites before, and the pictures are nice but they are not very complete and both have misinformation. The s5.com site got information from the other site and unfortunately some of it was wrong. They claim that they are 3/4 ton trucks with 1/2 ton axles which they are not. All Beau James trucks were 1/2 ton long bed fleetsides.

Anyhow, thanks for the info.

Joe
