Factory driveshaft + 450 HP = @#$%^&????

I'm going to be running a MagnaSupercharger on a 5.3/4L60E with a 3.73 rear gear. What's everyones opinion on using the factory 2 piece drive shaft setup? If I go with the factory setup, I plan on upgrading to a billet carrier bearing from CPP. Thanks in advance.

will that 4l60E hold up to that hp? I've had mine rebuilt in the 93 surburan twice and its just a stock 350? with all that motor, I would either rebuilt it as a new two piece or go with a one piece.. dont leave it stock .

I tend to agree. If you do still want to use the 2 piece, take the whole unit to a custom drive-line shop and have it balanced and rebuilt. Tell them how much hp you intend using and they will customize it to meet your needs.

I'd be more worried about that 4L60E. You'll likely break your U-joints before you roll a shaft. Are you going to launching it on slicks or is it just a driver?

Not in stock form by any means....he'll need to rebuild it for heavier duty to withstand the added power.

Re: Factory driveshaft + 450 HP = @#$%^&????

I forgot to mention this is setup is in my 69 Suburban:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=200387

It has the a factory two piece driveshaft and I had planned on keeping them because it is bagged and they help with the pinion angle. The transmission is a factory HD transmission (only 10 miles on motor and tranny ) that will be upgraded with a Corvette servo. It will be my daily driver when all is said and done, but I do plan to pull a 4500# camper with it. I may even take it to the track occasionally, . I had planned on getting it balanced and using a heavy duty billet aluminum carrier bearing.

Get a custom 2 piece, it will save you money in the long run, google Custom Driveshafts, and there are companies that will make a custom 2 piece shaft, balanced and everything.

Re: Factory driveshaft + 450 HP = @#$%^&????

I'd definately recommend sticking with a 2 pc setup for your application given the wheelbase and suspension setup, but upgrading to at least a 1330, if not 1350, series u-joint. That would mean the entire thing, from tranny slip yoke to the pinion yoke on the rearend would need to be replaced, but it would be the best way to do it. Using the billet/polyurethane carrier bearing will require using a slip/stub style rear shaft since the rigid bearing eliminates any fore/aft movement in the driveline which the factory carrier transmits to the tranny slip yoke to deal with rear suspension movement. We actually put a setup exactly like this in a '63 Impala (almost identical factory driveline setup) with a ls2/6spd and a F*%d 9". If I recall correctly we used 3"x .083" wall tubing, and 1350 Spicer cold forged joints; this car gets abused regularly and it has been a pretty bullet proof setup, but not exactly cheap.

Re: Factory driveshaft + 450 HP = @#$%^&????

The carrier bearing shouldn't be under any more stress if it's a 4 cylinder, or a 500 horse big block. All it does is spin through it. If it gets any lateral movement at all, something else is VERY wrong.
Keep the 2 piece, it'll be stronger.

Rob,
your tranny wont hold the wieght of that "bus" or the power of the blower, so just save yourself the hassle and let me take the blower off your hands...
Just trying to help a brutha out.
