Broken exhaust stud in BB
I broke a exhaust stud the other day on the drivers side collector of my 454 BB. I thought about drilling the stud for an easy out, then heating the collector to cherry red, and then turning out. Good idea or bad? Any other thoughts?

I broke 2 off of my BB last week! No Fun, I broke 2 drill bits and my easy out, I found its just as easy to drill all the way through wit a smaller bit then just undersize and run a tap through. Just my 2 cents. I feel your pain!!!

Generall, if the bolt broke from tightening the easy out WILL NOT WORK. THe best way is to drill the stud out and tap it. The trick is not to drill the entire bolt out use a smaller radious bit than the broken stud and tap it, so you can try to keep the same size bolts.
Note; if you drill the stud and use an easy out and it breaks off, it will turn into a headache and send you out searching for carbide bits. Do it the easier way way and save yorself some f-bombs.

If the manifold is cast iron, you can you a cutting torch if you're careful. Use low setting and several sessions. The cast iron generally won't melt like the steel. Then run a tap through it. I've done this with success on heads.
