Lightbulb crazy idea that just might work?

I know I am not the first one to think of this... I'm just wondering if anyone here has TRIED it.
POR-15, painted on headers.
Anyone did it?
Anyone know a guy who did it?
I'll even settle for anyone who knows a guy who knows a guy who did it.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

I know a guy who would try it... or I guess I now know two

Try a test sample on a pipe right off a manifold- my bet is it will start smoking & run off as a liquid.

Seen a guy try powder coat- I was there to help him fire it up. Took about 45 seconds and it was all in a puddle on the floor.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

I actually went and bought some por 15 for exhaust manifolds at the swap meet. I don't know how different it is from the regular por 15. I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

POR-15® is a high performance, versatile aromatic moisture cured polyurethane coating designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces and concrete. It dries to a rock-hard, non-porous finish that does not chip, crack, or peel. Because POR-15® is non-porous, it is an excellent sealer for porous substrates and it completely protects from water, chemicals, salt, and mineral oils. The highly porous characteristics of most substrates and traditional coatings permit harmful elements to penetrate which initiates deterioration. POR-15® is the only coating that is able to protect and extend a surface or structures life expectancy due to its unique non-porous molecular composition. POR-15® is also able to withstand prolonged exposure to temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.

http://www.por15.com/CS_DuctWork.asp that what i found that it's good to a temp of 600 f there Andy.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

so much for that idea.
Funny... I'm always saying most people who have issues with POR are the ones not reading the label.
I guess I am 'one of them' now.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

Not with POR-15, but I painted part of the exhaust on my 4x4 ATV with some Rust Bullet I had left over from the mower deck. So far it's holding up good....

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

Geeeee Longhorn...it would be a real bummer to be driving down the highway when all of a sudden your headers would burst into flames...that would not be good.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

The POR exhaust manifold paint holds up really well on headers, I had some left over from manifolds and mixed it and sprayed on set of headers I have on 327, it looks similar to some of the coatings you get at other places, no flaking or other issues and hs been in place 2 years, I think they have 3 colors to chose from. A 1/2 pint /pint goes a long way.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

The POR 20 works fantastic on headers. They make it in bright aluminum, cast iron gray, and black. Regular POR 15 burns right off.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

I POR15'd may original exhaust manifolds, and they have held up great. Still too dumb to post a pic or I would.

I glass beaded my manifolds, and then used a foam brush to paint the manifolds. I waited until the next day, and I put another coat on them. After I put them back on my truck, I started the truck and ran it for about 15 minutes, and then it was bed time for this old man. The next evening I ran it for about 30 minutes. Then I started driving it and I think they look great.

bummer manifolds don't get real hot... not in comparison to headers anyways.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

The por 15 I got says it is good up to 1200 degrees. The interesting thing is is says that you should thoroughly clean (sandblast is suggested) the manifolds before coating. This is the exact opposite of regular por 15 that likes rusty surfaces.

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

It is POR 20 that is used on the manifolds, not POR 15 (same manufacturer, different applications)

Re: crazy idea that just might work?

I went and looked again. The stuff I have is called Black Velvet. It is in fact made by por 15. The only reference to por 20 is in the directions in which they are explaining the thinning instructions for spraying. They reference the black velvet at por 20. I think they must have changed names at some point. It does say it will work on headers.
