Need help to ID this transfer gear unit

This transfer gearbox is not at all like the NP205 units in my other 72 Blazers. I was told that it is a "Dana 40" from a 1970 Blazer. I cannot find any info on a "Dana 40" and am thinking that the guy may have stated the wrong make and model #. The front axle/diff setup with it seems to be a Dana 44 and maybe this unit is a Dana 20 or another Dana model # if there is one. Or, is it a Rockwell item and, if so, which model #?

Please take a look at these two pics (top view and end view) and give me a specific ID.

Also, is there any reason why a person could not heat and bend the upper portion of this shift stick so that the stick will conform to the hump opening and line up near the 4 speed manual trans shifter as does the NP205 stick?

All help will be appreciated.

Re: Need help to ID this transfer gear unit

Probably not a lot of help, but I don't think it's a rockwell as they have a cone shaped cover over the pto shaft (the flat cover to the right of the output shaft on the rear of TC)? Not a 205 for sure. As for the stick, you can cut weld, heat bend, whatever it takes, but can the trans bolt to the motor?

Re: Need help to ID this transfer gear unit

Thanks for the responses and info to 70rs/ss, 72CustomCamper and Blazer1970. Looks like Chevrolet used both the Dana 20 and the NP205 in 1970, probably depending on the engine type (don't know on this one) or transmission type (this is on a 4 speed Muncie). Now I can proceed. Thanks again.

Re: Need help to ID this transfer gear unit

If you stick with the placement of the shifter, I have a chrome shifter surround that you're welcome to have for the shipping cost. My 70 K5 apparently had the Dana 20 originally but it was MIA when I bought the K5 but it did have this bezel mounted in the K5 and presume it is for a Dana 20.
