New to the board with '60 GMC
Hello All,
My name is Cort and I have been looking for a good forum for my truck for a long time and it looks like I found it! I am in Astoria, OR and I own a '60 GMC 1000. It has 81,000 miles and has the original 305A V-6 and SM-318 tranny. It runs like a top, and from all the different boards I have been on that discuss this engine, I always here about how these things get terrible gas mileage but mine has been consistently getting 12 MPG, which is not great but compared to my '03 Tundra that gets 13 MPG in the city, isn't bad... I eventually plan on rebuilding the engine and converting carbueration and ignition to a little more modern set-up just for better reliability. Looking forward to chatting with you all and I'll attach some pics soon... -Cort |

Re: New to the board with '60 GMC
Welcome Cort, from BC! That's a beautiful truck and I'm happy to see it still has the original V6. If you're looking for upgrades, I'd give the old generator the heave-ho and switch to a 10SI alternator. Much better idle output.

Re: New to the board with '60 GMC
Welcome, your truck looks real nice!
A Petronix Igniter to replace the points and dual exhausts and you will probably exceed your Tundra's MPG. Those V6 engines are heavy, durable and torquey engines. They are not revvers but will run well if kept in the lower rpm range and, as you found out, under rated mileage makers. They sound really nice with a set of Corvair turbo mufflers on them. My buddy had a 4x4 suburban when we were in college (I had a 63 4x4 pickup: my avatar), he got as good of mileage as my 283. Parts may be a bit of a challenge, but I bet they can be found. |

Re: New to the board with '60 GMC
Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!
justcuz: I haven't really decided which electronic ignition I'm going to go with: HEI from an even-fire Buick V-6 or Pertronix. I really want to keep the look as era correct as possible so I guess I'll probably end up going with pertronix. And, yes, dual exhaust is not far away... greg64: I am probably going to go with a company that makes a one-wire alternator that looks exactly like a generator, that way I can keep the look. I forget the name of the company and the are $$$, but I think it would be worth to me. Thanks again everyone! -Cort |

Re: New to the board with '60 GMC
Hi Cort,
If you're looking for the stock look, then I think you've got a great idea on the alternator that's a generator look alike. I'd also go the Pertronix route for your ignition. That's what I'm doing for a 292 that I'm currently building that I want to look fairly stock.

Re: New to the board with '60 GMC
Cort, go to the 6066gmcguy website and check it out. there is a picture of a V6 with an alternator on it. Also looks like it may have a Rochester or Carter carb too. Yours is a Holley right? Also if you can find a V8 fan shroud I would do that and put a clutch fan on it.
