I think it would be the flywheel cover.

exposed torque convertor
It's a "dust sheild". Some were sheet metal - some were plastic.
Hope this helps. Jeff

Its not really going to hurt running without it for a while, when i put a big block in my truck for some reason i forgot to put one back on,even though i have many lying around,i prefer the metal ones so when im not a bonehead and forget, its easier to clean and shoot some nice gloss onto, mine hasnt been on in 5 years, maybe when the starter goes out ill put it on,or give one to th new owner so its a complete truck-lol

you have one Desert rat?
you have a flywheel cover laying around? A decent one that is. If you do I might have to make a trip down there and look @ what else you have.

Not a good idea to keep them off in my opinion. If you want your front pump on your transmission to stay in good shape then get an expection cover. You can get them cheap aftermarket, or just go to a wrecking yard. They're often sheet aluminum or steel, and are easy to clean up.
I have a TH400 that went without a cover, and the one in my truck has always had one. You can see the difference in the front pump seal, bushing, and pump cover. Lots of dirt and filth on the non-covered one, and deep grooves in the bushing where debris got up between the bushing and the converter kneck. As proof check this out. This transmission didn't have an inspection cover, and the front pump is a damn mess. It's going to need a lot of work done. Hopefully the gears are in good shape.

I helped a friend with a motor swap in his suburban. We never put the flywheel cover on. We were driving down the highway and a nice peice of gravel went flying up inside. The rock tore a hole through the torque convertor, not cool. So I strongly reccomend you put one on
