Tailgate band doesn't fit...???
Hey guys I just recently bought a tailgate band but it doesn't fit my tailgate. Did they make different year models for the bands or are some tailgates not designed to use a band?
Anyone know? thanks! |

The tailgate band is too deep on the back side. It doesn't sit down in the tailgate like it should. It's the right width and all, it's just too deep....? So what's the deal? Do I have the wrong one?

maybe its for the wrong genre 73-80 was a slightly different with the shallowness of the center of it

Will a 73-80 band work on a 81- up tailgate?

Re: Tailgate band doesn't fit...???
From what I remember in my search for a tailgate band, the new model 81-87
have different amount of mounting holes, the newer ones have 4 and the older ones only have 3, I can't confirm on the depth.

Re: Tailgate band doesn't fit...???
Well, I was going to get a 81-up tailgate for my '73 and just run my tailgate band. I better rethink that idea if there's complications...

Re: Tailgate band doesn't fit...???
It sounds like you are trying to use an 81-91 truck band on a 73-80. I used an 85 band on my 78 but used the 78 mounting clips. The band does stick out further than normal but still looks “right”.
The first picture below is a 78 band on a 78 tailgate. The second picture is an 85 band on the same 78 tailgate.

Re: Tailgate band doesn't fit...???
The early one looks like a cleaner design. I have an 83 GMC and my band fits like the picture. It sticks out a bit. Since we are on the subject is there any way to refinish those? I tried some Mothers polish but it must be anodized or clearcoated or something. I considered some type on stainless overlay but can't figure out how to make it look good.

Re: Tailgate band doesn't fit...???
it's the older style tailgate band but it is just too deep. I may have to modify some brackets or something.
If anyone has an answer to this mystery please let me know. Thanks! |
