Question Hi, noob here with a ?

Hi all, brand new member. Looks like a great and active forum. Kind of surprised to find a group this size for these old beasts.

I bought my 72 GMC 2500 in 1993. Got it from the second owner. Didn't specifically want a GMC. Just wanted something with a camper on it to go to the desert in. It had about 52k miles on it and the camper had been on it since it was almost new. The outside was a little dull but the inside was really clean. It had a miss in it because of a bad valve. Fixed that and had it painted and redid some of the chrome. It came with a lot of original documents like the Protecto plate/ warranty guide, owners manual and build sheet. The truck was built in California and has stayed here all its life. Been a great truck for me. It now has 68k miles on it and I haven't driven it anywhere in a couple of years. Still start it up and drive it up and down the block every month.

My question is how late of a model is this one. The build sheet says 06/15/72. I was just curious if anyone would know when production ceased on the 72 or how many came after this one. Thanks in advance...Rick

Don't know when they stopped production, but Welcome to the board! That's a tough looking old truck! I'd have to guess it would pretty late. Longhorn Man could probably tell you.

Welcome to the board. Nice truck you have there.

Generally vehicle production for a new year starts in August or September.

But i am not sure on the old trucks how it worked.

I am sure a few members here have the info you need. And they will chime in shortly.

Re: Hi, noob here with a ?

Thanks for the kind words. I still don't know anything about these trucks it had almost everything I wanted when I bought it except air. It says Sierra on the side and Sierra Grande on the glove compartment plate. I assume this is one of the upgraded equipment lines. I added a cheap cruised control that is still working fine. It still has the original brakes on it although it is almost time for a change. Compared to the new cars and trucks these are a dream to work on. No error codes to figure out no ABS, EBCM or whatever etc. Rick

A few more pics...

Re: Hi, noob here with a ?

Welcome from NorCal! You have found the greatest board on the 'net, bar none!

What a nice, clean truck! Was the roof originally white?

My '72 Chevy was built in August 1971, so yours must be a fairly late '72 model year build.

Re: Hi, noob here with a ?

Yep, the roof was white. When I had it painted I just wanted it shiny and didn't care about how original it was. The guy who painted it did a great job. It was done 15 years ago and he used the 2 stage paint or whatever you call it with clear coat. It still cleans up really nice. The camper probably helped protect it quite a bit. And yes this seems to be a wonderful board. I am really surprised to find such an active group. Many thanks for your replies so far.

Rick

Why would anyone want a dusty old tailgate that's been sitting in a garage for 36 years. Like to help ya out but I just might need it someday.

Re: Hi, noob here with a ?

What a beautiful survivor! Thanks for posting all the great pics. Would love to have that truck parked at my place.

Looks like you have the glass style fuel filter, some will advise that you might want to replace it with a plastic or metal filter to avoid the risk of having it break and throw gas on the hot manifolds - would hate to see the truck burn. Others will tell you that they are fine to use. If you replace it, not a bad idea to replace the rubber fuel lines too - they can deteoriate over time.

Again, beautiful truck!

Naw, since it just sits I am pretty confident it won't blow over. It was surprisingly stable when I did drive it years ago. The rear tires that were on it had some super wide custom wheels and the tires were about 12" wide. Looked like the back end of a cement truck. With a good tailwind I could get 7 to 8 MPG.

I am considering selling or donating the camper and making a driver out of the truck. Trouble is I have too many trucks already (3) a Supercharged Corvette and a Honda Blackbird. I am the only driver so we will see what really happens.

It really is in the garage "somewhere"???... I know some people have an Excel spreadsheet listing for every entity in their garage. I however am not like that and have not seen the interior walls of my garage in several decades. Therefore if I do happen to either remember or actually see it I will take a picture.

Thanks guys, this really is a great and fun forum...
