What the heck is my truck?
I think it is a dually that someone just put 3.4 ton rims on. I have posted it on another site and nobody could give me a answer. I traced the truck back today. It used to be a DNR truck for the state of iowa. AND I was under the truck today and its never had rear shocks? There is no top mount. There was never no top shock mount. The holes for the rivets have never had rivets in them. I did find a cool 12v siren under it. lol It never had a stereo in it either. Where the stereo goes it was flat. Some guy cut a hole in the dash with a sawzaw and it looks like it got away from him.... Anyways I just bought it to haul junk twice a year.

Re: What the heck is my truck?
its a 1 ton truck and it looks like the rear wheel is set in narower than the front, which would lead me to believe the truck had duals on it at one time.

Re: What the heck is my truck?
The front tires set out about 3" on both sides.
Would dually rims bolt on it? And are the 67-72 dually rims the same as the 73-87 dually rims |

Re: What the heck is my truck?
vin plate appears to have been changed or at least removed at some time because it looks as if its got the wrong rivets attaching it to the cab

Re: What the heck is my truck?
that is a one ton cab and chassis truck with the DRW option. The rear shock were optional on one tons, and commonly not purchaced.
Those rivits are the correct ones for the data plate. |

Re: What the heck is my truck?
The Budd wheels varied between the 67-70s and 71-72s.And,in`71 when they changed there were both split and clinchers available in both 16 and 16.5.The earlier drum brake split rims had holes for 7/16"(memory?) and when they went to discs the hole went to 9/16" and stayed that way through the`91 V/R models.

Re: What the heck is my truck?
So if I was going to put the dually rims from a 73-87 truck on my what would I do about lug nuts sence the lug studs are different size.

Re: What the heck is my truck?
yes, shocks were optional on one tons.
I have never done this on daulie rims, however, on the single wheel set up, the taper of the lug nut still holds the wheel perfectly fine. If I remember corectly, the later wheels require a 'lug nut ring' (or whatever they called it) that goes between the lugnuts and the wheel, the ones I've dealt with have the same kind of taper as the wheels you have on there right now. I'd bet a kick in the daddy parts that you'd be fine with the later 9/16 stud wheels and the 1/2 inch studs you have on there now. (the 7/16 was 1/2 ton stuff) Remember, the lugs don't support the weight of the truck. On a wheel that fits properly (GM wheels please) the center hole rides on the hub, and that's where the weight goes. This is called hub centric. The lug nuts just hold the wheel on. |

Re: What the heck is my truck?
why the heck would shocks be optional ... not disputing it, just don't understand the logic behind this.

Re: What the heck is my truck?
Why no shocks?Weight.Shocks act to dampen the spring`s recoil after depression. With a load you don`t have that.It just dips and comes back up because the spring packs are so stiff. They act like they don`t want to dip in the first place.
On my`70 I bought chrome wheels that were for later trucks with 9/16" holes and used a spreader ring,a seperate piece that goes on after the wheel and has the tapers cut into it.I cut tapers into the wheels and used tapered lug nuts.It worked fine and was a full time always loaded work vehicle I used foe years...no problems.I wanted to knock out the studs, drill and use 9/16 studs but everyone I talked to said I couldn`t keep the wholes centered. That doesn`t make sense to me to this day.The whole are already drilled.I was just boring them larger, like boring a cylinder, right?
