700R4 questions

What kind of money am I looking at in rebuilding the 700 I have in my truck now? If I have it built back to stock specs, will it handle the 300hp I have now or the 400+ I plan on having later? Is it expensive to get a stall converter for these things, or will it be a huge waste of time and money? Anyone have experience with this?

A 700 R4 will cost you what you want to spend. I have a couple that I have built for different trucks (one with a 2400 Stall converter and NO LOCK UP) and the other with a lockup convertor and a stock stall. I have put the heaviest items that are available to the public in both of them. This allows for a good chrisp shift in both trannys and longevity in the parts. My NON-Lockup tranny is behind a 425 plus HP 383 stroker and is pushing 3.73 gears. The tranny with a lock-up convertor is behind a 91 stock 350 engine with upgraded exhasut and air intake at around 190 HP and 3.42 gears. I stand by the fact that the heavier duty parts will make the tranny last longer, but I would do a standard 350 the same way. Both trannys that I have done ran me around $1800.00 to build and I already owned them.

i just re-did the tranny in my truck and it only cost me 700 bucks, the 355 in my truck is making about 350-400 hp and i put a 2300-2500 stall converter i bought for another $250. I think if you only want to do it once have the guy build your tranny to the power you expect to have not what you have now, no reason to do it twice.

The OD is in the gearing, not the torque convertor. The lock-up feature takes the slippage out of the torque converor only. You still have the .70 Over Drive feature in a 700 R4 W/O lock-up.

Here's a different question:

The 700 I have in my '87 SWB is now behind a mild 454 instead of the 350 that it came with..

In order to get the linkage correct after all of the aftermarket additions to the BBC, I put a Lokar system in place for the throttle and TV.

I followed the instruction for the TV cable which were to make sure the tv cable was stretched to its maximum at WOT. But, yet the shifting is still late and it drops out of od on any kind of load.

I'm sure it's an adjustment issue but is it something that I'll just need to play with until I get it right or does it need to be done professionally? I've debated rebuilding the TH400 that came with the 454, but I like the idea of having the 700 out there for cruizing to various areas in the region.

Well, I finally sold my 4x4 and I'm going to pick up another 700 for my baby tomorrow. Does anyone have a link to the instructions on how to adjust the TV cable correctly? I don't want to have to go through this mess again in a week!

If you don't get this issue fixed ASAP you will burn up the tranny. . .

I've read several articles on the process. I've had a 700 in several vehicles over the past 6 or 7 yrs, all of which have been behind a semi-stock 350.

Some of the articles talk about using a pressure gauge to assist in the adjustment.. which leads me to think might as well have someone who knows transmissions do it. On the other hand, common sense tells me that small adjustments to the cable should get me there too.

I do know the way it is, the trans won't last long especially hitting it with almost 500 ft lbs.

Did the kit come with a geometry correction kit that bolts to the carb linkage ? The kickdown hole provides incorrect geometry for TV purposes.

I went out to Lokars website to see if I could find the kit I got, but it's in pieces on their site..

I basically got the HI-tech throttle linkage kit wbracket to bolt to the back stud of the carb and the Hi-Tech kickdown cable that bolted to the same bracket. It had a stud that bolted to the linkage of the Edelbrock 750 I'm running... The dealer said nothing about a linkage bracket to correct the geometry. I know the bracket you're talking about, but i'm not using it now.

ok.. I decided to have the TH400 rebuilt.. too much powah for the 700.

Dropped it off yesterday, stopped by today, 700 already out, TH400 getting rebuilt, drive shaft off to the driveline shop.

Should be back on the road by the weekend.

hi neighbor... no plans yet.

Thinking of keeping it for my next project... but, now that I think of it, that project will have a 496 or better in it so it would shred it anyway.
