Anyone had their rearend rebuilt?

Curious as to how much you spent just got a quote to drive my blazer in and get new gears seals and bearings installed for 650. 1 day of work. Just curious if this sounds right or not? Thanks

If they're rebuilding the entire axle (hub seals, spindle bearings, new gears, master install kit, and labor), that may not be too bad. If it's just the pumpkin (new gears, master install kit, and labor) you should be closer to $500 an axle.

Check around the net and with the vendors. It may be a bit cheaper to buy the gears and install kit you need and then just pay the labor to install it.

I've spent about $350-400 just on gears, seals, and install kit by the time it is shipped here; that's just parts. So that's not too far off when you add a couple hours of labor to it. Plus, you would rather pay somebody a little more if they know what they're doing. If just any ole shop does it & not experienced, you'll have alot of noise & replacing them again soon!

If your taking to a shop, flat rate time is about 5-6 hrs. plus parts. Around here you'ld be paying about $1200.

Is this for both rear and front??? Or just rear?? If it's both then someone is messing up their calculations cuz that's dirt cheap, if it's for one, it's about right.

I just had mine done about 3 weeks ago, I paid $550 just for labor. I had another $930 into .488's front and rear (Yukon gear), Auburn Pro series posi (rear only), and master install kits, lube, & additive. Oh, and a u-joint for the front axle.

This is just the rear and my pinion seal is leaking so I am thinking of changing to some different geas so the price includes all the parts involved to switch out gears ,bearing and seals. I drive it to them and I drive out the same night. 650. They are a well respected rear end only specialist type of shop here in the bay area. So I think 373 gears is what I am gonna do.

$650 isn't bad, the axle bearings/seals are an easy do it yourself if it isn't included in the $650 price. Do you know what your current gear ratio is, and do you have a 3-speed or OD trans? The reason I ask is that a 3:08 is kind high, but a 700r4 has a low first gear and then a 3:08 is OK. If you have a 3:73 already and a 3-speed (th350/400) then a little higher gear will help cruize rpm down. And if a 33, 35" tall tire it all changes again?!

No i have a turbo 400. Im running those 22 285 40, I am thinking of a 373 gear set to pick up some tourque

Let me go find the tire size calculator I have, figures tire height and the "gear ratio after tire height. Sorry about asking again, didn't realize I was posting to the same member I did a few days ago, I know the Blazer, just forgot!? I'll be right back with a guesstimate, BTW width of wheel (can make tire a bit taller or shorter depending on width).

This link is sweet!! Has calculators for just about everything!! You need to know what your OE gear is and then maybe a guess at an OE tire size? Then it'll pop out the gear ratio needed to restore OE ratio. Figure a steeper ratio if you want more perf. I'll keep looking to see if I can find the one that shows your actual gear ratio + tire size = the acts like gear ratio.

OK this one is a table, but it helps, 31" tall tire needs this ratio for a good 65 mph, cruise, this one for in town, and this one for perf. Hope that helps??
