Help with Rearend

ok guys, i recentlty started work on my 64 LWB and started to look for parts. I want to convert my truck from 8 lug to 5 lug. i recently found a guy on craigslist parting out a 72 and i offered him $150 for the rearend. Is this a good price?

$150.00 for a good 72 5 bolt coil spring rear end is a good buy. I live near Portland Oregon the best I found here is $300.00

Yeah. i have a coil spring rearend. Thats why i want one out of a 72 because from what i have heard its a direct bolt in. the guy couldn't give it to just yet because he is still parting it out and doesn't want to diassemble the rear just yet. he said he'll hold for me and that he'll look into what its worth because he didn't have any idea what it's worth either. So hopefully he sells it for the 150, if not i'm willing to go to 200.

They are a direct bolt in. I have one in my 65...

Great price for the rearend as some have stated.

Fleetside- your 65 stepside a C10 or C20?

I too am swapping out rearends but for a better gear selection for my 64 C20.

jcf - I ask why you are swapping to 5-lug rear? Is just for the 5 lug only, better gears or both?

The 64 C20 3/4 ton conversion to 72 1/2 ton is not cut and dry - what is! I've been going through this conversion stuff for sometime now on my 64 C20. I've decided to keep my rig a C20 by using a 8-lug 14bolt from a later model truck w/t 3.42 gears.

A couple of suggestions here:

• If you are doing this swap just for 5 lug conversion but want the C20 beef your truck came with - you can keep the Eaton H052 (in your truck now) or swap to a 14 bolt truck rearend and swap out the hubs with a 5 or 6 lug hub kit & disc brakes from geartechhd.com for $1495. This way your truck stays a C20 but on 5 or 6 -lug 15" wheels. Pretty trick set up. I know it''s pricey but it depends on what your overalls use of the truck is gonna be.

• If doing the swap just for the 5lug conversion. You also will get more gear options with the 72 1/2 5 lug rear you want to buy. It should be a direct bolt-in but to the trail arms only. Note that 3/4 ton u-joint may be different / larger than the one used in the 1/2 ton 72. Meaning a new yoke for the 72 diff or modify the rear driveshaft end.

• Speaking of the driveshaft - I believe the Eaton H052 is longer from center of diff housing to end of pinion than the 12 Bolt diff is- meaning you may have to lengthen your drive shaft.

• Finally there may a differance with track arm lenth. The mount location on the diff housing for the Eaton H052 rearend under your 64 now is different than the one on the 72 1/2 ton 12 bolt rearend. Note that the track arm is different length on 63-64 vs 65-72 1/2 ton trucks. I came across this issue when using a 67 C10 rearend on my last 64 C10. This can be corrected with after market track-arm kits - check with customperform.com

I say the above because I have the Eaton under my truck now, a 12 bolt rearend from a 66 C10 (same as the 72) and a the late model 14 bolt ff rearend in my garage.

Mine is a C-10..
