Speedometer Cable Help

Yo, my speedometer is not working and has not since I got the truck (68 C10). I assumed that it was the missing driven gear so I got the correct one and confirmed that there is a drive gear in the transmission.

I noticed that the cable with the end going in the speedometer is noticeably smaller than the hole it goes into. I would say that the end of the cable that should be turning the gague is about 1/16" wide. Does the hole get smaller inside? As far as I can tell this is the original gague cluster, but I'm not sure about the cable. The gear did slide over the cable on the transmission end. Could there be a problem inside the gague? Do these these cables break often internally?

The cable may have woobled the gauge backside out and not doing any good inside the housing. You can buy the new cable at any part store. Get one and put it inside the gauge and see if it turns it.

They're fairly easy to remove, clean and lube. I did mine about 6 months ago. While it's out, you can check to see if it turns on both ends. They're pretty sturdy woven cable, but I figure it's possible to rust and break.

On mine I can unscrew the dash end and pull the inside cable all the way out of the sheath. You may be able to do the same on yours.

You can also buy new ones at local auto parts places.

Since I was tearing it down soon, I didn't repalce my cable when the end was rolled. Instead, I uncrimped the end, shortened the cable abotu .25" and the sleave the same, then re crimped; worked great.
