Re: wood bed

I've seen many board members suggest using Spar Varnish.

Re: wood bed

Spar varnish works well, but if you do it right polyurethane will work well also. My father in law finished bowling alley lanes for years and suggested the following when I did mine. Quality poly, brushing in only 1 direction, wait until out side is dry (flash dry it will still be wet on the interior. Use a wool bonnet on your buffer to turn the molecules of the poly.this will cause the poly to cross bond, allow to finish drying, wet sand with 600 grit paper and add another coat using same process until you have the coverage you want, I went 8 coats using this method. This was on the top only, on the bottom sides and ends I mixed linseed oil into the poly, stirring well. The linseed oil acts as a carrier for the poly pulling it into the wood. Your wood will get significantly heavier, but you will nothave to worry about rot or peeling problems. You will get a furniture like finish on the top and the rest will be like a rock. This is what the finished product looks like.
