i think my starter is done

well i have been dealing with my starter getting to hot. normally i jusy pop the hood and wait 10 min and it sarts right up. But today its acting up but ive waited for several hours now and all it does is click. is my starter done?

Solenoid might be fried. Do you run headers?

ya i have headers.

Classic heat soak symptoms. The starter windings get so hot they won't conduct electricity. Other causes are.
1 Bad connection on battery positive at the solenoid.
2 poor ground from the battery negative.
3 solenoid contacts inside the solenoid are shot.
4. The starter has a dead spot in the armature or the brushes are shot.
If you can get to the starter bendix gear you can rotate the starter a small amount and it may start.
check and clean all positive and negative connections from the battery to the starter and ground.
Most likely you'll need a new starter. To avoid these problems you need either a heavy duty starter, a remote solenoid or a mini starter. You probably have headers-right?

Headers and a lean mixture create a hotter-running engine, making hot restarts easier to experience.

When you replace the starter, be sure to install a heat shield on the solenoid. You can pick one up at AutoShack, etc.
