My 454 doing a little posing

With the help of Blazerboy and Barn9 we got the old manifold off and couldn't pass up sitting some of the goodies on the engine for a poser pic! So glad I painted it. Oil pan is next.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm so glad I was talked into cleaning and painting the engine.

The valve covers have 454 stickers to go on them and were just $98 from Scoggin Dickey - now down to $90. That's pretty cheap for aluminum.

I am curious about how those headers will fit as well. I just went through the process of putting a BB in my 4x4 and the clearance was tight on the right side. I used factory manifolds.

nice, thats the first time i've seen those valve covers on motor, they're bad ass, might get some myself, especially at that price.

when you get an air cleaner that big-to make it fit do you just change out the air cleaner stud to a longer one?

Blazerman - hope my front springs are up to the task, should be with the hd leaves you gave me - didn't know they would actually be put to use for a big block when you gave them to me!

The headers are Dynomax Cermacoated that are for the 73-up 4x4. I'm just gonna have to see how they work out. I will think positive and maybe get lucky!

Breeh - what clearance problems did you run in to - just curious of what to expect.

I still might try to find a 73-87 engine cross member and towers as that appears to help on the header issues. Checked around the local salvage yards by phone with no luck yesterday.

Oh, Blazerman - sorry there isn't a pretty background for the pic rather than my junkie barn!

Maybe I will have to roll it outside or something.

I have heard the best headers for the 4x4 truck are 66-67 Chevelle big block headers, but I cannot confirm.

I was going to try using a set of Hooker Super Comps for first gen Camaros and there was no way they would fit. I had to trim about a 1/4" from the frame rail on the passenger side to get factory manifolds to fit. I slid the motor forward about 1 1/2" to accomadate the 700R4 and to give myself some more HEI clearance but I don't know how this would affect header clearance. Anyway, if yours fit I would love to know.

I just put a big block (454) in my 72 4x4, and am wondering what fan shroud you used? I've been looking for one, but haven't found one that will work. Thanks.

Talking

LOL Fred!! I think you're gonna have to go the back of the line! LOL!

Hey Mark, I seem to remember someone else talking about using the Chevelle headers on the 4x4's, might be worth posting on the subject. Let me know about progress, etc. Cya!

Dynamax headers part# 86022 fit very good on big block 4x4 trucks. We have sold many sets without complaints on fitting and installed them on 6 or 7 trucks in our shop in the last year. Send me the motor and i'll test fit it and make sure it goes thru a correct break- in period for you, send 2 sets of fresh tires with it along with extra drivetrain parts.

Ed, the ones I bought are for 73-87 BB-Chevy 4WD (1/2 and 3/4 ton only), part no. 86089. They were a shot in the dark hope that they will work + I am giving some consideration to trying to pick up a 73-87 engine crossmember and towers as I have read that helps with header options. So far haven't found any local or on the 73-87 parts board.

On the big blocks you have installed, have you generally left the engine in the small block location and used the 67-72 small block engine mounts?

I knew the headers were gonna be a sticky fitment problem but from what I had learned before ordering these headers, there was not much info out there on what would work.

If you think the 86022's are the definite way to go, I have plenty of time to ship them back and get those. Thanks for any additional input.

Jason, that is a factory BB shroud for a 2wd truck (67-72).

Thumbs up

Yukon,
that looks awesome, you're gonna have a wild ride with that beast under the hood.
if you can't find the later crossmember locally, give bill at vintage chevy truck out here in calif a call- 510-651-5874. he's not cheap but usually has whatever parts you need. his inventory changes on a daily basis so if he doesn't have it today, he might have it in a day or two. he's a good friend of mine and normally gives my buddies a little better deal on parts so feel free to use my name if you wish.
keep us posted on your progress.
