axle swap
I have a '67 gmc 2wd I think a half ton but not sure. It has 6 lug rims on all 4 corners and the guy I bought it from mentioned something about 3/4 ton suspension.Any ideas guys??? It has the trailing arms with coil springs. My real question though is what I can swap into the rear of this truck for an axle. I'm a welder so I can move/change spring perches and other stuff with no problem. It currently has a 3.73 ratio mated to a turbo 350 with no lock-up converter behind a 305 4-barrel v8. I'm thinking maybe 3.08??? Don't need the power, just want to be able to cruise town and the highway and not have such high revs and better fuel milage. I compared axles to my 81 4x4 and the 67 looks to be 2" narrower. Maybe no big deal but I was wondering what axles fit under these trucks with coil springs. Like maybe something a little newer?? Thought probably someone on here would know some options of what works and doesn't. Would probably consider swapping to 5 lug axle and changing front to match. Any ideas guys??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Re: axle swap
6 lug is original, and 1/2 ton parts. They went to 5 lug in 71.
I would locate a 71/72 3,07 gear rear axle, no fab work, simple bolt in |

If use a newer axle these guys have the trailing arm plates. http://www.stockcarproducts.com/trkarm1.htm
you will need a pan hard bar relocator too. |

Re: axle swap
If you are going to have to buy a rear axle and don't mind a little work, I have an idea. My brother and I just swapped the rear axle out of a 95 Caprice Cop car with 3.08 posi and disc brakes (I forget, but I think it is slightly narrower than stock) under his 72 cheyenne w/ a 402. We still have to set up the panhard bar mount. We were thinking of fabbing a plate that would sandwich between the housing and rear cover to mount the bar (Any other suggestions?) If you swap in a stock rear from a 71-72, you never know how worn out it is. I went through this with my dad's 71 GMC 1500 SWB step (avatar) w/ 20k original miles. It is a 6 cylinder 3 on the tree truck, had 3.73's. It was wound up too tight going down the highway. He only "cruises" it, no pulling, so I found a 3.07/ 3.08 (?) posi for $100. The pinion seal was leaking, so we tore it down and resealed it and put in all new bearings. The ring and pinion looked OK, so we left it. dad had a shop in Victoria, Tx set the gears back up, $100, (reasonable). Unfortunately, it has a slight whine on deceleration that was not there with the 3.73 rear axle... Oh well...

Re: axle swap
I'm a Red Deer guy too, and have a similar situation-when I go O/D I'll prolly want more gear than my current 3:08's, small world eh?
