Definition of 'Frame-Off'

This is probably a stupid question, but I value evryone's opinion here. Due to the limitations of the size of my garage, I am resto-modding my 68 SWB in phases - rear end and bed have been completely removed, rust treated, painted and reassembled. Same with the cab, engine and front end. Since, at one point (just not all at the same time), everything has been removed down to the bare frame, can I say that the truck has had a 'frame off'?

I think it came from the typically lazy speech coming from those who really don't know what they are saying.....It's supposed to be "Off- Frame". Maybe it's just too many ffffs and people don't feel comfortable saying it like that?

It's your truck. You did the work. You can say what ever you want to about your truck.
I prefer "ground-up restoration" myself., even though I haven't done it.

Re: Definition of 'Frame-Off'

Typically a "off frame restoration" means a total and complete restoration. Meaning ALL worn parts are replaced with new right down to the little rubber bumpers on the glove box door. Basicaly if you make the truck just like it rolled off the line when it was new you have done a off frame or frame off. And to get technical if you modify any part its no longer a restoration but a "resto-mod"

Now if you ever listen to them say a number 1 or number 2 restoration, (can be herd on barret jackson) That refers to the level of detail. A number 1 resto car should be EXACTLY like it rolled off the assemblie line right down to the proper paint on every component.

Theres a bunch of stupid rules and crap for restorations. I learned about alot of it with my dad as we did a 56 chevy del ray "resto-mod". We basically did a number 2 resto on it but because we used base clear paint and didnt go with the original colors it fell into a resto-mod catagory. What made it a number 2 was the fact that we didnt use GM colors on components such as exhaust manifolds ext.

Its all a bunch of BS when it comes down to it, build it the way you want and tell people what you did, dont worry about labels.

Right. I've seen ads that claimed that a Mustang (65 for instance) had been treated to a frame-off restoration. It's got a UNIT BODY! how can they say frame off when it can't be separated from the body.

However, it can go on a rotisserie. I'll give 'em that.

Re: Definition of 'Frame-Off'

I would say yes. I understand the issues with room in the garage, not to mention neighbors who just don't understand the build process. Sometime we can't do it all at the same time. I had to do a lot of mine quietly at night. Sounds bad, but in my neighborhood, if somethings on the driveway of value/possible value, numerous cars will stop thinking it's a garage sale. Here's a picture of how low I managed to take my truck.

Re: Definition of 'Frame-Off'

Wow - thanks for all of the replies! I have always tried to stay away from the term 'restoration' (even though I did say resto-mod) because it is certainly not going back to stock. I have replaced all of the parts (so far)that normally wear (seals, bushings, springs etc.), addressed all of the rust on the body and taken the frame down to bare metal. Still lots more to do, but perhaps in the future I will call it an 'off-frame customized' or something like that. On another note, I wanted to say how pleased I was at the quality of the body parts that received from Tri-Pro. I was a little leery dropping that much cash for a grill, but it was the best purchase that I have made for the truck so far. I saw the comments from them on this string and I wanted to say thanks.

oh yeah, i'm on ULLS-A(E) now too...

can't wait to see how messed up my flight time is... I know a few guys in the PA units but not all of them.

Maybe you could call your truck a "Progressive Phased Restoration"

Yep, if everything came off the frame it's a frame off.

Re: Definition of 'Frame-Off'

Frame-off:
Taking the frame off the body.
IE: I took the frame off the truck to do the frame off.

Off-Frame:
Taking the body off of the frame.
IE: I took the body off the frame to have it painted.

At the end of the day, it is semantics.

I think you can say your truck is an off-frame-off. lol

Re: Definition of 'Frame-Off'

If you want to call it a frame off, go for it. all of the body has been off the frame right?

Now if you want to get really detailed you can go for a thoroughbred restoration. I know this ones a F*** but you have to give the guy some credit for what he went through. http://www.mustangmonthly.com/featur...302/index.html

Even the markings from the factory, paint pen marks, stickers, EVERYTHING needs to be there. Read the article this one amazes me. Its basically a N.O.S. car.
