workin on a truck...
I seem to have stumbled upon a little extra time off!
Not in a good way though. So I am looking for a little side work untill I can go back to work on the 5th. After talkin to a buddy of mine, askin if he needs some stuff taken care of, he points out to his area of 'spare' vehicles, and said, the skunk needs some help man. Ladys and gents, I introduce to you.... the skunk. It's a beater 72 C/20 cheyenne super, with a 402/TH400/Dana rear, A/C, custom-ish bench seat, lots of bondo, and very... and I do mean very, little potential. The best thing this truck could ever do, is donate it's parts for better causes. But, my bud wants to hold onto it, floorboard holes and all. I gave him some burb parts not too long ago, one of his underpaid lackies bumped it into the back of one of the flat beds a few months ago (it has no brakes right now). So he told me to go ahead and take care of the damage. Could it be called project low buck? Maybe project 1/2 ass is good enough? Project skunk? project pile of crap maybe? I dunno... it's a VERY good running 50,000 mile pile of rust and filler... but it's kinda neat. Like a retard... I never got a good 'before' photo of the damage i was working on. You can see in the above photo, the truck got punched in the nose... the upper grill is damaged, and the white hood was tossed on there about a month ago to replace the kerfagled one. I DID however, get a photo of the fender after I ripped it off... so it'll have to do. No core support damage, just a curled bumper, folded fender (which those two were damaged when he bought it) then the punch in the grill and buckled hood. So after an hr and a half, I got it stripped down to this with no air tools; So I hook it up to the bumper pulling machine... It came out decent. No where near perfect.... but, if it was perfect, it would look WAY outta place on this truck! This was about when I realized, I forgot my drill. I was putting all his trim on my old fender to see what all I would have to drill.... the 'super' badge needed new holes, and obviously, the upper trim. A trip home for the drill, and I get it all done up with the quickness. Bust out the D.A. sander, (kick on his compresor too) and start knocking the yellow paint down... The fender wasn't perfect... the lower front section (the 'parts cup' if you will) had been folded up a tad, bit otherwise the fender was very nice. I didn't do any body work at all on it. I was even told NOT to try pulling out the semi-folded cup. He asked me to paint the fenders. I told him I wouldn't be able to get the fender and hood painted properly. All I could really do was spray bomb... rattle can. He just said "look at the truck man"... handed me a $20, and said wally world should have everything you need. So here it is 1/2 way thought the paint. you can see, I forgot to pick up a news paper. But, I improvised. I'm not quite sure WHY I was putting the trim and stuff on as I was going.... but I was. So... as I'm painting it, I do get one small run. Maybe more of a sag. So I started getting p!ssed. But I don't have enough time to sand it and start over.
Well, jim comes out as I was looking at the run/sag and he says "forgetaboutit".... yeah, as one word. So I keep on keeping on. Shoot the lower black, install some trim, shoot the upper black, finish off the trim.... and check it out. Not too shabby eh? that front lower trim had been folded under the bumper... only took 5 min or so to get it looking right. (right-ish) There's a couple dry spots in the upper black, the one sag I mentioned, and a spot of red in the upper white portion that came from the wallmart bag/masking. Here's the cool part... even though I was kickin my self in the rear, saying it was looking like hell, full of flaws.... it looks better than the truck! Then I toss my old grill on it, and install the semi-straightened bumper.... So tune in later, to hear me say "wow... that don't look too shabby for an old pile" and to see that I will prove... yet again.... that you can in fact, polish a turd. Monday morning I need to go back to finish the fender/grill/bumper install, then DA the hood and shoot it. That'll be a tough one to do without the "tiger stripe' effect.... but I think I can get it. After that, he has a few other small things on the truck that needs done... So we'll see what it turns out lookin like. Last edited by Longhorn Man; 08-31-2008 at 01:05 PM. LOL... yes Jim... you are 100% right. This is the source of the sunburn.
I had thought it would be under a couple trees in the driveway, but he had some stuff in the way and I couldn't put it there. I told him it will be getting moved first thing monday morning. Yeah... it hurts. |

I gotta say, I am havin a good time workin on it. It's kinda bitter sweet though... considering my burb is sitting here in the back yard needing the hood and fenders DA'd down and some primer put on it.
I hope to get a day or two of my suspention that i can work on the burb... we'll see how much i make on this job, and with the scrap stainless i have laying around. Don't have much alluminum or brass/copper laying around. I usually do. |

I was in a mild traffic accident in a shop truck... and I do mean mild. Never popped the air bag, no damage at all to the H3 i rear ended... but he gets on a rant yellin that all accidents are preventable and blah blah blah.
It's OK, i was lookin for a job when i found that one. I was soooooo close to tellin him that I was putting in my 2 weeks on the spot when he got all stupid. with the one week suspention, and the 7 days of paid vacation I have saved right now... I woulda just grabbed my tools and told him to mail me my next 3 pay checks. But I know you never quit when there's nothing lined up. It's all good though... so far, I am making more on the side than i am at work. Screw him. |
